There are few life events that cause as much stress as a wedding. Between venue reservations and finding the perfect dress, weddings come with a lot of moving pieces that all need to come together seamlessly for one day. Lately, more and more people have been ditching the traditional planning of weddings and going a more DIY route, from creating your own centerpieces to making homemade invitations. Some brides even thrift their wedding dresses. But there’s always been one unspoken rule: buy the wedding cake. Even if it’s from your local grocery store bakery, you buy the wedding cake. Unless your name’s Maisie Boesiger, that is.
The TikTok influencer from Nebraska set out on a mission to bake her own wedding cake, and I’ll be honest, it actually didn’t start too badly. Sure, I thought that choosing three different flavors (vanilla, lemon, and Funfetti) was an interesting decision, and maybe using box mixes isn’t something I would do, but it’s not my wedding, so who am I to judge? Besides, this woman had a dream, and I applaud her for attempting to execute it. But then she started stacking the eighteen layers, and that’s where it all went wrong.
Now, if you didn’t spend your childhood binge-watching Cake Boss like I did, you might not know this. If you’re making a tiered cake, you have to level each layer so that it’s flat, otherwise you recreate the Leaning Tower of Pisa with cake. And despite the comments in Maisie’s videos urging her not to forget this step, she apparently didn’t get the memo. That’s right, she stacked eighteen cakes on top of each other without making sure they were even first. And while I give her props for using dowels to keep everything in place, without flat layers, the dowels don’t do much.
An attempt to decorate the cake was cut short due to an emergency need to get the cake in the freezer ASAP, and the TikTok of the journey from kitchen to basement freezer was as precarious as the cake was tilted. The entire saga, which started six days ago in a TikTok with over 15,000 likes, ended just nineteen hours ago when Maisie revealed that her parents got her a new wedding cake since her own ended up being such a fail. But she’s still adding one small Funfetti cake on top, and my fingers are crossed that her final layer turns out better than the previous eighteen.
Despite dozens of comments roasting the influencer and begging her to have a backup plan, I can’t help but commend Maisie for her attempt and good humor about the situation. And the TikToks of her stacking eighteen layers of uneven cake while assuring everyone that it wasn’t tilting at all gave me a laugh I truly needed.
