Pesto is one of my favorite things. Put it on pasta, eggs, pizza, you name it I’ll probably eat it. But call me crazy if you want, I’ve never liked store-bought pesto — actually, that’s a lie, I do. But TikTok content creator @susi.vidal doesn’t. She posted a recipe video of her pesto in September and has gone viral but not in the way you think. The latest trend is called ‘Susi-Stitch’ where other creators stitch Vidal’s pesto video with a “crazy” story of their own.
What’s the ‘Susi-Stitch’ trend?
The trend started out with Vidal opening her TikTok video by explaining that she doesn’t like store bought pesto. “Call me crazy if you want, I’ve never liked store-bought pesto,” she begins her video, before jumping into her own recipe for homemade pesto. But her opening line has led to other creators using it as a jumping off point to tell crazy stories of their own.
Content creators stitch Susi’s video recounting their craziest experiences — mostly first-date fails, secret relationships, or finding out you had a child 30 years later like in @herpaperroute’s TikTok. Crazy right? The stitches have nothing to do with store-bought pesto. It’s basically a drama/gossip session going for longer than 30 seconds to recount the experiences — some being as long as five minutes.
In TikTok user @herpaperroute’s video, she tells us about a man who comes to her bar, asks for a strong drink, and tells her about losing the love of his life 30 years ago. With the help of Facebook, she was able to find the man’s old love, who has a daughter who’s around 30 years old and looks exactly like him.
The drama doesn’t end there. Content creators stitching Susi’s videos and trying to top being called crazy. Elle Engogh, also known as @elle.engogh on TikTok, recounts the time her house was almost burned down due to a grease fire. Also, I learned from watching this that you’re not supposed to water on a grease fire. I’m not alone in this since Engogh was also looking for water, specifically a bucket because she remembered the Jimmy John’s commercial where a house fire is put out with buckets filled with water and everyone involved in saving the house eats subs afterward.
Even Hank Green hopped on the trend, but to say it is a little weird that Vidal doesn’t like store-bought pesto. Her pesto TikTok might not be crazy but has had the most interesting stories stitched to it for the past couple of weeks. So, thank you, Susi, for not liking store-bought pesto.
Okay, but what’s the pesto recipe?
If you do care for the gossip and actually want the recipe, no worries! According to Susie’s TikTok video, you’ll need:
1 cup basil
⅓ cup parmesan
¼ cup olive oil
2 large garlic cloves
1 ½ tablespoons pine nuts
1 tablespoon lemon juice
pinch of salt
Add that all to your blender and blend until smooth.
