What Are Frambled Eggs?

Can we please chat about eggs? I genuinely have never found a more diverse breakfast food to experiment with. It’s one of the first things I actually learned to “cook” by myself. I prefer to scramble or hard boil my eggs on the regular, but if I’m feeling fancy and want to level up my avocado toast, I’ll fry my eggs and leave the yolk runny for dipping. Give me omelettes, shakshukas, fritattas, you name it; if there are eggs involved, I’m eating it. Eggs are so near and dear to my heart that when a new method arises and gets people chatting, I’m all ears. How can there be a way to cook eggs that hasn’t already been invented?

It started with one girl who accidentally invented a new hybrid egg cooking method. Deemed “frambled eggs,” this college student had a similar moment to the Slinky inventor, unintentionally blending scrambled and fried eggs in one pan to create a masterpiece. And the dish has grabbed attention all over social media. The viral craze has led to recreations of the eggs and claims that there’s never been a better way to eat them. Many questions linger among the egg community, such as who actually invented frambled eggs, why they’re so good, and how to make them.

What are frambled eggs?

What became such a viral trend has shockingly simple characteristics. The dish is just a blend between scrambled eggs and fried eggs, leaving you to enjoy fluffy scrambled eggs with some bits of runny yolk. Most videos online have shown creators eating the dish on its own, but you can also pair it with toast, bacon, or other breakfast sides for the full gourmet experience.

How did frambled eggs originate?

This nameless breakfast dish was originally shared back in January. TikTok user Kait (@bussyrelate) was just a student posting content from Ohio State University. One morning while making scrambled eggs, she posted a video of what came to be after accidentally leaving one yolk intact. She shared a video of the pan’s aftermath asking her followers, “Did I just invent something?” Since posting that video, it has gained 20.7 M views on TikTok, and people in the comments deemed the creation “sunny side up scramble.” However, as more and more people have recreated the egg dish and shared their own versions, it has slowly become known as the much catchier “frambled eggs” online.

How do I make frambled eggs?

Original creator Kait realized her egg invention video left fans begging for a tutorial. She took to TikTok a few days later after comments were confused by how she had runny eggs left in the scramble when it appeared she didn’t break the yolk. She demonstrates exactly how to recreate the eggs with steps, starting with two eggs cracked in the pan. She then leaves one yolk untouched, using the egg whites from both eggs to scramble the other yolk that should be broken. Halfway through cooking, she flips the intact yolk and then lets it cook all together. From there, you have a gorgeous plate of frambled eggs, and Kait shows herself serving the creation with a piece of golden brown toast.

Why did frambled eggs get so viral?

According to TikTok comments and later videos recreating Kait’s creation, people cannot get enough of frambled eggs. Comments on Kait’s tutorial range from “You just changed my life. Thank you” to “this is like when cavemen discovered fire except the caveman is me and the fire is egg”. Frambled eggs have become a breakfast staple for many due to their high protein, delicious texture, and lack of needing to dirty a bowl like typical scrambled eggs. This has triggered a hype among foodie social media creators like @itsnormalfood, who in her recreation video praises the dish for its “best of both worlds” nature. Another creator, @wheninmanila, captioned their video “we are never going back!”.
