On April 20, Ben & Jerry’s had their seasonal re-launch of the Brrr-ito: two scoops of ice cream topped with chocolate sauce and cookie crumbs, wrapped in a thin waffle. As a self-proclaimed ice cream enthusiast, I needed the scoop on these burritos (literally). Two friends and I set out to our local Scoop Shop to investigate.
Upon arrival, I was underwhelmed by the lack of advertising. Posters from Free Cone Day still covered the walls. I placed my order, hoping the server would know what I was talking about. She walked over to the fridge, pulled out a less-than-fresh waffle, and began to make my burrito with the Tonight Dough and Chocolate Peanut Butter Swirl. Slightly peeved, I jealously glared at their waffle iron behind the glass; Chipotle burritos are definitely fresher than this.
Each Burrr-ito costs $6 a piece. This seemed a bit steep, as a small cup or cone (two scoops) costs $4.25. Luckily because of their Buy-Two-Get-One-Free promotion on 4/20, we paid $12.60 for all three. The two full-sized scoops were undeniably there and the cookie crumbs were a nice touch. It photographed phenomenally, but would it measure up to the taste test?
It looks like a soggy waffle, it tastes like a soggy waffle, it is a soggy waffle! The ice cream itself was bomb, per usual, but the waffle really added no value to the treat. Although I felt like a boss eating an ice cream burrito, it melted faster than I could fit it into my mouth.
After finishing the first scoop, the burrito was a melty mess. Ice cream seeped through the waffle and pooled in a chocolate puddle. I scarfed down the second scoop so quickly that I could barely taste the peanut butter. When my friends and I had finished, our hands were sticky and our faces were chocolate coated.
“Do I regret the experience? No. But would I do it again? No,” said my friend Brooke.
Lesson learned, some foods are only worth it for the insta. Next time you’re at Ben & Jerry’s, skip the brrr-ito and go for the fresh cones. You’ll thank me.
