If you’ve been anywhere near TikTok in the last two years, you already know that Trader Joe’s mini totes have everyone in a chokehold. The routine is always the same: Trader Joe’s announces a new tote, the internet collectively loses it, and by the time most people make it to the store, the shelves are already bare. With summer coming, TJ is planning another tote bag drop and it’s expected to be no different — this time, the bags are something that will be of everyone’s interest and one that is much needed to combat the summer heat.
What are the Trader Joe’s mini insulated striped tote bags?
The grocery chain is releasing mini insulated tote bags in six colors for just $3.99. The bags measure 10 x 6 x 6 inches with a one-and-a-half gallon capacity, featuring a zipper top and two reinforced handles. Basically, it’s a mini cooler that also happens to be extremely cute. Not only that, but this tote is perfect for packing everything from lunches to beachside snacks.
While two of the six varieties are striped, four come in bright summery colors: blue, purple, green and orange. So there’s genuinely something for every aesthetic — whether you’re a coastal grandmother in training or in your “the louder, the better” era.
When does the new bag drop?
The bags drop nationwide on May 20 at Trader Joe’s stores everywhere, only available for a limited time while supplies last. Now, if you decide to show up casually on May 21 thinking they’ll be in stock, you are going to be devastated.
Since the mini tote debuted two years ago, all editions of the bag have sold out instantly — which was later restocked — and sold out again. Resales often have listings up to $60, with one listing up to a staggering $10,000. Yeah, it’s THAT popular. The bag obsession is so intense that stylist Michelle Barrett told Newsweek that Trader Joe’s totes have “entered one of those cult following trends that often come from social media like TikTok.”
So, if you’re planning to score a bag for your closet or have been dying to get your hands on a TJ’s tote, it’s best to go on release day and get there early. If you need to follow a certain regime, call your local TJ’s store about stocks of the totes and follow fan accounts on social media to keep up to date on when the bags are available.
Miss the drop? Don’t fret! Past versions have been restocked after selling out, so there’s a chance that they’ll come back. Just don’t resort to paying resale prices unless you are truly committed and don’t mind breaking the bank.
