After much anticipation and months of easter egg hunting, pop girlie Sabrina Carpenter released her latest studio album Man’s Best Friend on August 29. In the 12-track project, Carpenter details her experience dealing with heartbreak and all of the tribulations that come along with it. One of the tracks that has received significant attention is “Go Go Juice.”
What is Go Go juice?
Whenever you hear someone say “go go juice”, the chronically online folks will refer back to the Toddlers & Tiara segment of Honey Boo Boo drinking her go-go juice, which is a mixture of Red Bull and Mountain Dew. For others, go-go juice is slang for an alcoholic beverage. Go-go juice can also refer to caffeinated drinks, such as coffee and energy drinks.
Although the album is filled with playful cues and lightheartedness, “Go Go Juice” seemingly takes it a step further into coping with heartache — in a sad girl sense, if you will. “Go Go Juice” doesn’t refer to literal juice — instead it refers to alcohol. Normally, when someone goes through a breakup, they may find a coping mechanism to help them get through the rough time. In Carpenter’s case? A glass of liquor is sitting by her bedside.
What does Sabrina Carpenter’s “Go Go Juice” mean?
In the country-pop influenced track, Carpenter sings about drunk-dialing one of the boys on her contact list. She is doing this as a way to forget her heartbreak and to give herself the opportunity to mingle with someone else. In the first verse, Carpenter sings, “Love when happy hour comes at 10 a.m. o’clock on a Tuesday / Guess a broken heart doesn’t care that I just woke up / Got a soft spot for a bev’ and a boy that’s fruity / Can’t lie, whole week’s been rough.”
In the chorus, Carpenter is open to calling anyone, even if it’s John or Larry. To the die-hard fans, if you pay close attention, parts of the chorus could serve as a clapback to her ex-boyfriend Barry Keoghan. Adding onto that, Carpenter is also aware that her heartbreak is something that won’t last long, but for now, she’s numbing the pain with some liquor.
She sings,”I’m just drinking to call someone / Ain’t nobody safe when I’m a little bit drunk / Could be John or Larry, gosh, who’s to say? / Or the one that rhymes with ‘villain’ if I’m feelin’ that way / Oh, I’m just drinking to call someone / A girl who knows her liquor is a girl who’s been dumped / Sippin’ on my go go juice, I can’t be blamed / Some good old-fashioned fun sure numbs the pain.”
Now, this is where things take a turn. For anyone who has a bit too much to drink, you may find yourself calling your ex and telling them how much you miss. Yeah, Carpenter let that be known in the second verse. She sings, “Ring, ring, ring, yeah, it’s super important (How many shots in an ounce?) / I might have double vision, but that’s irrelevant right now (Answer me, baby, um, are you in town?) / I miss you and I think about you every minute / If you’re still disinterested in me, well, f—.”
Honestly, this song is perfect for those who are also experiencing a similar situation. Or, if you want to scream this at the top of your lungs during a road trip (it is a country song, BTW!). Once again, Miss Carpenter didn’t fail the assignment and she delivered — even with her go-go juice in hand.
