After a year and a half of construction, the Alcatraz-Claremont block of College Avenue is finally open for business, bringing with it several new and exciting stores. Now, only a mile and a half from campus, students can get their fair share of 2/$1 donuts, Mint Mojito Iced Coffees and, coming soon, beautiful ice cream sandwiches. What more could a college student want?

Walking into the new Philz Coffee, you are greeted with elegant wood tables and counters, plants everywhere and a menu bursting with exotic coffee drinks. Like the other Philz locations, you order with a barista, hop to the cashier to pay, wait until the lovely barista calls your order and asks, “Would you like any cream or sweeteners?” and indulge in the heavenly experience that is drinking an expertly made cup of coffee. Notable mentions are the Mint Mojito Iced Coffee, Turkish Delight and Philtered Soul.

After grabbing your drink, head on over to Safeway, whose entrance is conveniently located less than 20 feet from Philz. With a bakery section bigger than the size of most college apartments, four isles of frozen food, a bulk section, toiletries and all the produce you could imagine, Safeway is a college student’s dream. Where else can you buy your kale, Hotpockets, shaving razors and 50¢ donuts all in one place?

Another great aspect of Safeway is its takeout section. Want some food to go with your coffee? Safeway’s got you covered! With everything from fried chicken to fruit salad on the menu, lunch is quick and easy. Make sure to keep an eye out for great holiday deals—on Pi Day, pies were knocked down from $5 to $3.14! And with the Safeway Club Card, savings are everywhere, which comes in handy when you’re living on a poor college student’s budget.

As of April 6, 2015, only Safeway and Philz Coffee are officially open. However, CREAM is hoping to open its doors any day now, letting students flood the store as hungry eyes consider all the possible cookie and ice cream combinations.
