It seems that we can’t escape the horror of food recalls as of late. From McDonald’s Quarter Pounders to Treehouse Foods’ waffles and pancakes, it feels like anything and everything is suffering from some sort of food recall. But, what if something ends up getting recalled due to a small mistake on the company’s part? Unfortunately, Costco butter is the latest victim.
In case you missed it, the beloved warehouse grocery chain Costco recently mandated a recall of their butter after the packaging was missing the “Contains Milk” statement. The situation occurred at a Costco in Texas on October 11 where nearly 80,000 pounds of Kirkland Signature brand butter was distributed from Continental Diary Facilities Southwest LLC. According to the FDA, the recall was labeled as a Class II, meaning that the butter “may cause temporary or medically reversible adverse health consequences or where the probability of serious adverse health consequences is remote.” In other words, the product isn’t safe to anyone who suffers from food allergies or is lactose intolerant, as it was an “undeclared allergen.”
Following this recall, a lot of people are highly confused as to why Costco would be selling butter without a milk disclaimer. A simple mistake like this could easily be fixed if the company’s distributor paid just a bit more attention to the packaging, and made sure that every product design contained the necessary information about dairy contents. Amongst the whole butter fiasco, a new meme has made its way on the internet. And, yes, Costco butter is the main character.
After the news broke about the missing milk disclaimer on Costco butter, social media users have created memes and tweets about the recall, and each one is funnier than the last. Despite the seriousness of the situation, the recall didn’t avoid becoming the face of online ridicule. Most of the hilarity pokes fun at the fact that Costco seems to have forgotten that butter does, in fact, contain milk. From jokes about disposing of it to dropping it off at people’s doors, the minds of social media users shared their thoughts of the situation.
Of course, it contains “milk”
Costco just recalled 80,000 pounds of butter because they neglected to label it with ‘may contain milk.’

As someone with serious dietary restrictions I am sympathetic to this issue but I have to say…this is pretty ridiculous. We all know butter contains milk. pic.twitter.com/2wdJy55thl
Most users wanted to let everyone know that no matter what butter you get or where you get it from, butter will contain milk!
Yep, butter still contains milk

I genuinely feel bad for people with an allergy, but butter is literally milk.
Why are we still acting surprised?

Is the FDA hiring?
I got my Sharpie out and marked my Costco butter package. There, FDA. solved that nasty problem.🤣😂🤣😂😂

I feel like stickers that say “contain milk” could solve a lot of problems.
