Why Are People Trying (& Failing) To Eat Sushi In Face Masks?

Imagine it’s late and you’re hungry and you’ve yet to start your skin care routine (a situation I find myself in a little too regularly). Well then, I might have the trend for you…if you can hack it, that is. TikTok users are trying to relax by eating sushi in face masks, but apparently the TikTok trend is harder than it looks, as users have posted videos of themselves getting the sushi stuck in the mask’s mouth hole or the mask slipping while they’re trying to eat.

Who started the trend?

This accidental internet eating challenge is all thanks to Hailey Bieber, who posted a video on her TikTok showing her effortlessly eating sushi while, you guessed it, wearing a face mask, with “I’m Not a Girl, Not Yet a Woman” by Britney Spears playing over top of it.

Naturally, people tried to copy her, because, admit it, relaxing your face and your tastebuds at the same time sounds like a good plan. However, things aren’t going as well for other TikTok users as they did for Bieber, with results ranging from slightly chaotic to epic fail.

Is eating sushi in a face mask really that hard?

I can’t say I’ve tried it myself, but if you look at TikTok, the answer is yes. In an attempt by user @emersonpenney, when she tries to eat a piece of sushi, her face mask slips right over her mouth and she cracks up at the failed attempt.

Another user, @joespamssss, also miserably failed in the effort. While she at least got the sushi in her mouth, the sushi caught the mask and pulled it into her mouth, leaving her in a sticky situation. The sushi probably tasted good, but the mask? Not so much. User @coconutbtw managed to eat sushi and other food in her mask, but admitted that it was hard to do, saying, “Hailey Bieber made it look easy.”

@joespamssss

1st fail- getting the wrong mask, 2bd fail, eating the mask with my sushi… (also my man’s a trooper and loves me because he didn’t like the masks lol 😭♥️.. neither do I) #haileybeiber #haileybaldwin #fyp #trending #fail #funny

Some commenters agreed with posters, with @zz.vaaasha saying “i’ve watched 10 different people try to do this and they’ve all failed miserably, i’ve come to terms with the fact that hailey just has swag and superpowers.”

What is the best way to eat sushi in a face mask?

If sushi and face mask night sounds fun, but you don’t want to end up with face mask in your mouth, there are solutions. One user, @savmeeks, avoided the challenge of eating sushi in a face mask altogether with a simple solution — just cut off the part around the mouth and enjoy your sushi and your smooth skin without struggle. Sure, your chin misses out on the moisturizing, but at least you can eat your sushi in peace.

Many commenters suggested that the key was letting the mask dry first, while some posters avoided the slippage issue by using a clay mask that you paint on instead of a pre-formed one.

It may be the case that people looking to eat sushi in a face mask just need to be discerning when choosing a face mask, finding one with a lot of suction or a large mouth area. Or it could be that it’s a skill issue that requires a little practice. Either way, it seems like a trend worth trying, if not for the relaxing experience or the good sushi, then the laughs.
