The area surrounding Herald Square is known for several things: Madison Square Garden, Penn Station, Macy’s and a disturbing lack of good restaurants. For the next month, that issue will temporarily be resolved as Broadway Bites opens up in Greeley Square. Sponsored by 34th Street Partnership and UrbanSpace, this event follows the successful model of Mad. Sq. Eats and the Union Square Holiday Market by bringing together some of New York’s top food vendors.

While it features long time favorites such as Roberta’s and and Red Hook Lobster Pound, the terrific new vendors are what set Broadway Bites apart from the competition. From our friends over at Bantam Bagels to the comfort food specialists at Mason Jar, these vendors have something for everyone.

For those looking for vegetarian or more healthy options, Two Tablespoons offers a variety of vegetarian, gluten-free dishes such as the coconut curry lime stew with French lentils and cauliflower. This hearty stew is much lighter than your average stew, but it is no less warm and comforting.

Setting health aside, Mason Jar offers terrific renditions of traditional comfort foods such as baked beans, fried pickles and red velvet cake. Since most of the dishes here are quite rich, this is a great place for anyone looking for something to share.

Started by four friends, Chutney serves a variety of Indian tacos. Though the possible combinations of protein, chutney, and sauce are numerous, it is hard to go wrong with anything that includes the tender and flavorful lamb.

Next to Chutney, Jicama serves Asian-Latin fusion cuisine with a healthy and creative spin on California street food. While the extensive menu includes everything from agua fresca to spring rolls, the coconut curry squash soup and spicy Mexican hot chocolate are definite standouts.

For anyone with a sweet tooth, The Poffertjes Man is one vendor you can’t miss. This newcomer specializes in one dish – mini Dutch pancakes – that are made fresh to order and served warm with a dusting of powdered sugar. These bite sized treats are a great choice to take on the go or eat while strolling through as you check out the other vendors.
