What the 2016 Presidential Candidates Would Be as Dessert

This November, the American people will be voting to decide who will be the next President of the United States. Before we get there, we need to decide who the Republican and Democratic candidate will be. Our countries political system is complex and interesting. What else is equally as complex and interesting? Dessert. An equally important decision (to me). Sometimes I have a hard time separating the delicious sugar meals from the people who seek to lead the free world. Here are the desserts that remind me of each candidate the most.

Republicans

Donald Trump – Lemon Bar

Donald Trump. This candidate wants to make America great again. And nothing says nostalgia quite like the lemon bar. It’s a classic. Sour. Yellow. Flaky. Yes, nothing says Donald Trump quite like the tart lemon bar.

Ted Cruz – Maple Taffy

Ted Cruz doesn’t have complex policies. He is a candidate for the people. He wants to help them help themselves, which is why the perfect recipe for him is maple taffy. It’s a simple recipe. Just pour molten sap on some fresh fallen snow. It’s brilliantly easy, just like this snow ice cream recipe. Invented by our neighbors to the north in Canada, no dish better represents Cruz’s desire for simplicity.

Marco Rubio – Key Lime Pie

The young Florida senator is attributed to bringing some youth back to the GOP, but just because you’re fresh and new doesn’t mean you can’t be traditional, too. Just like  key lime pie. The wonderful citrus dessert from Florida is just what the young senator can come home to. Yeah, Rubio can drink to that.

John Kasich – Vanilla Pudding

John Kasich is certainly around. It’s certainly nice to have something consistent about a candidate. Something available. Something that just loves to run. Something like… vanilla pudding. I bet there is vanilla pudding in your cabinet right now. And John Kasich would be really willing to be in a cabinet right now too, like, say, the presidential one. As the president. Ben Carson – Soufflé

The brain surgeon. Once a strong front-runner in the race to the presidency. There isn’t much out there more complex than brain surgery, except maybe soufflé. Yes, Ben Carson likes his complex and decadent dishes. Souffles are exciting and intricate. Such a long and arduous process for a nice, airy, puffed up pastry.

The Democrats

Hilary Clinton – New York Cheesecake

Clinton is no stranger to the White House. She has been the First Lady and the Secretary of State and now, the former New York senator wants to come home as the leader of this great land. This candidate has been everywhere in the world, much like New York cheesecake, the state’s best dessert. A signature dish from the Big Apple, where Clinton was once the Senator. This dessert is a staple of American sweets, but still a little rich.

Bernie Sanders – Crème Brûlée

When Sanders announced his candidacy earlier last year, many people didn’t know who he was and fewer thought he could win. Now he seems like a real contender for the Democratic nomination, now that people are giving him a fair shot, much like crème brûlée. This dessert has felt the Bern, and its yummy, soft custard center topped with a bit of a crusty exterior is exactly the dessert for Bernie.
