Get your spoons ready- because we are all celebrating the return of the 80s with these four classic cereals. General Mills has teamed up with Mario Lopez to host The Ultimate Saturday Morning Drive-in, featuring cartoon classics that you can enjoy. On Saturday, October 3rd at 10 a.m. PT, join General Mills in watching your favorite childhood cartoons and eating snack packs of all four classic cereals from Los Angeles or from the comfort of your living room. The company brought back four original flavors- Cocoa Puffs, Cookie Crisp, Trix, and Golden Grahams- while adding a twist to each.
“I am a big cereal lover. It’s easy to team up with General Mills because they are reintroducing the old school cereals that I loved as a kid. They brought back the original flavors and shapes, and they are doing this really cool family event. I have three kids so I am all about family,” said Mario Lopez.
The Cocoa Puffs are Lopez’s favorite, as General Mills is bringing a more chocolatey taste to the breakfast cereal. The Cookie Crisps are delivering more of a chocolate chip cookie taste, Trix brought back its six fruity shapes, and Golden Grahams is throwing it back to its retro recipe- honey! When asked how Lopez enjoys his Saturday mornings, he said that his kids often get up early to make themselves a bowl of cereal as he used to do as a child. Now he loves to make big bowls of cereal at night instead.
“You feel very independent when you’re a kid doing that. Turning on the TV and watching cartoons- that’s like your little grown up moment,” answered Lopez.
You can be a part of the experience in person or from your couch for free- watch it live at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena or grab your remote and stream it from your home. Reserve your spot at the Drive-in or learn more about watching it at home here.
The interview continued with the most important food debate of all: does Mario Lopez put milk or cereal in the bowl first? Cereal, hands down.
“Who puts milk first?! That’s the weirdest thing I’ve ever heard in my life. I don’t trust those people,” said Lopez. I have to say, I couldn’t agree more. You heard it here first; debate settled!
In addition to the General Mills Ultimate Saturday Morning Drive-In, Lopez is busy playing his old character, A.C. Slater, on the ‘Saved By the Bell’ reboot. According to Lopez, there is no exact air-date, but the first season of the television show just wrapped and should be expected to air by the end of this year.
“It’s going to be different, but there are a lot of nods to the nostalgia and some easter eggs/references to the past. I think the writing is on a whole other level; we have a great group of young kids who did a great job balancing old generation and new generation,” said Lopez.
This makes it the perfect partnership between Lopez and General Mills as they are traveling back in time to childhood. You can also check out his podcast, onwithmariolopez, to keep up with his latest projects. According to Lopez, that is the platform he is the most himself in, as he is able to record it with his wife. A true family man- which is exactly what this event is all about! I cannot wait to tune in.
