If you are obsessed with hummus like me, this will probably shock you too. A restaurant called The Hummus & Pita Co. just launched a new hummus ice cream on National Ice Cream Day and people are going crazy over it on Instagram.
This Mediterranean-style restaurant is already popular for their dessert hummus. They have three different flavors including cookie dough, chocolate and cake batter, in addition to their traditional savory varieties—original, sun-dried tomato, jalapeño—and many more. They also serve pitas, fries, laffas and more mediterranean food, including a sort of weird hummus milkshake in different flavors that they launched a few months ago.
If you check out their menu, you'll notice that they have a lot of vegetarian and vegan options (including some of the dessert hummus but they really went crazy with their brand new vegan-friendly hummus ice cream. According to their Instagram page though, we don't need to worry. because it actually doesn't taste like hummus.
The ice cream is made with chickpeas (like hummus), tahini, coconut cream and some other plant-based ingredients. They came up with four different flavors: strawberry, chocolate, butter pecan and cookies & creme. All the varieties are lactose-free, gluten-free and vegan.
I have high hopes for this ice cream because I've tried chickpea chocolate chip cookies before and they taste nothing like chickpeas, so I believe it when they say the ice cream won't taste like hummus. Even though they're based in NYC, you can check out their other locations across the US to go and try this weird but apparently delicious summer treat.
