Everyone is always saying they need “a sweet little treat.” After dinner, everyone wants to go get ice cream, cookies, or even cake. And honestly, I just can’t relate. I don’t want a sweet treat. I want a salty, savoury, sometimes even spicy treat. I would trade cookies for olives any day. Ice cream? No, I’ll take a jar of pickles instead. If it’s not salty, I don’t want it. I always felt alone in this rejection of sweets for savoury, until I found the Savoury Girl.
Who is the Savoury Girl?
Holly Barnes, or @savourygirll on TikTok, is the queen of all things savoury. She showcases her favorite savoury snacks, meals, and even drinks. If you’re someone without a passion for all things salty and savoury, her recipes may look like a joke to you. I mean, who’s actually sticking a pickle sandwich and a rotisserie chicken in their bloody mary? Savoury girl is.
The best part about Savoury Girl? She doesn’t care if you don’t get it — she knows there’s a population of people out there with demented tastebuds that will understand her videos, and their mouths will water. That’s why at the start of every video, she says “Duh!” Like, why wouldn’t we be making a crab rangoon grilled cheese?
What kinds of recipes does Savoury girl post?
Savoury Girl covers snack plates, martini fountains, and insane sandwiches, to name a few of her expertises. But most of all, she posts creative recipes that combine savoury ingredients that you wouldn’t even think to combine.
While the onion boil was just a trend for some, the Savoury Girl took it and ran with it. She’s made all different kinds of onion boil variations, but her most creative one has to be the elote onion boil. After going through the steps of a regular onion boil, she adds corn, queso, tajin, mayo, and tabasco. Once it’s baked, she tops it with Flaming Hot Cheetos. If you’re not a savoury person, you just won’t get it. But personally, my mouth is watering.
The Savoury Girl gained a lot of popularity for making “the dirtiest bevs known to mankind.” While a regular martini features a splash of olive juice, Savoury Girl adds olive juice, pickle juice, pepperoncini juice, and cocktail onion juice to hers. Of course, she rims her glass with parmesan cheese. Plus, she tops with a stick of pickles and olives, some truffle oil, and some pepper. There’s basically more juices than alcohol in there, but as a savoury girl myself, that’s how it should be.
The Savoury Girl is the salty, spicy, briny food representation that savoury girls everywhere have been seeking. Not only do I feel seen by her love of savoury food, but she also inspires me to continue combining weird, unlikely ingredients to make the perfect savoury snacks.
