We Asked College Students If They Prefer Peanut Butter or Jelly, and Here’s What They Said

This article is written by a student writer from the Spoon University at U Chicago chapter.

The peanut butter and jelly sandwich is the classic American snack. With a creamy, nutty spread paired with a sweet fruit jelly all nestled in between soft white bread (no crusts, please!), this comforting sandwich satisfies the palates of all foodies. Whether serving as a nostalgic snack or quick breakfast, you can never go wrong with a PB&J. I mean, just look at its simplistic beauty:

However, as much as we love both peanut butter and jelly, there can only be one superior spread. Could it be the delightfully sweet fruit jelly or stick-to-your-mouth peanut butter?

To find a winner in this hotly contested battle, I conducted a survey amongst 50 University of Chicago students asking the simple yet tough question: Do you favor peanut butter or jelly in the classic PB&J sandwich? Students were then given the option to choose either peanut butter or jelly. After analyzing the results, we have a winner. Drumroll please…

Data analyzed via KwikSurveys

With 82% of all votes, peanut butter is the clear winner. Not short of a landslide, peanut butter is the favored spread in the classic PB&J. Not to worry, though, jelly, we still love you.

But, it is possible that your friendly counterpart peanut butter has more health benefits, is more versatile as a baking ingredient, and is easier to eat out of the jar with a spoon.

All results aside, though, let’s take a moment to appreciate the wonderful combination of peanut butter and jelly. We wouldn’t be college students if we didn’t love PB&J.
