Do you ever find yourself going to CoGro (aka Common Ground Coffeehouse) for the sole purpose of buying a coffee, but end up drooling at the glass display of La Rocca cakes instead? Well, we all have. In fact, we do every time we wait for our Caffè Americano.

Let’s face it, those coffee runs happen often, and being on a student budget only allows us to stare (Augustus Gloop style) at the frosted beauties before us.

If you’re like me, you might spend more than just a few seconds staring at all the options of cake, making you oblivious to the fact that your top secret bagel order’s been called twice already.

It’s time to stop staring and treat yo self. This is a student-ranked guide everyone at Queen’s should have on hand to avoid the hangry stares of those in line behind you.

So which one of these 13 instaworthy cakes do you want to make your bae?

13. Cherry Cheesecake

This cake is a classic indulgence that pairs perfectly with the memories of going home from university and having your grandma complain about how you don’t eat enough. She probably then proceeded to bake you a homemade cheesecake, which is why a slice of this cake makes you feel right at home. This one goes to you, grandma.

12. Strawberry Shortcake

Honestly, I think everyone wants a taste of this cake because of that cartoon we watched as children with the little girl in the mushroom-shaped hat. Her name was Strawberry Shortcake, and the cakes she baked were probably exactly like this one. Who wouldn’t want food inspired by cartoons?

11. Blueberry Cheesecake

The younger, trendier sibling of the cherry cheesecake. Both cakes are classically delightful, which is why they’re ranked so close together. However, with blueberry being a famous super-food and all, this promising cake beckons us.

A healthy diet’s all about balance, and these syrupy blueberries on top of our cheesecake is good enough for all cake-lovers.

10. Dulce Napolean Cake

I don’t know if it’s because of the architectural brilliance of this cake or the fancy, schmancy dulce de leche filling, but this cake keeps us intrigued.

You see those perfectly puffed pastries sprinkled with powdered sugar? Dip them in coffee like a real adult while discussing preparations for your next dinner party. You still have the whole cake ahead of you.

9. Chocolate Truffle Cake

Chocoholics rejoice because as we move higher up in the ranks, we find that students are truly in love with cocoa.

If you find yourself eating an entire box of truffles after the holidays, then this cake is meant for you. After a piece or two, you’ll be doing the truffle shuffle all the way to class.

8. Chocolate Fudge Cake

This cake is for the students who put chocolate on their cheese and bacon. Laura Secord applauds the decadence of each fudge-lined slice. Every bite is super rich, so maybe you can share it with that cutie from your politics tutorial (or not).

Regardless, this cake is fit for royalty, which means it’s perfect for every Queen’s student who graces the floor of Cogro.

7. Cookies and Cream Cheesecake

By default, the inclusion of Oreos in any dessert makes it a winner.  Even though this combination of blended Oreo pieces, chocolate, and cheesecake didn’t make it to the top, it’s chilled out vibes put smiles on our faces.

This cake doesn’t care whether you twist, dunk or shove it all in your mouth, and is already wearing milk’s favourite cookie like a crown. What more could you want?

6. Super Caramel Crunch Cake

If we were ranking the most unique cakes at Cogro, this would be number one. I think meringue’s one of the most dope desserts and this cake’s pecan meringue is on a whole other level.

With caramel and whipped cream, this is a light, yet completely satisfying piece of heaven. If that doesn’t convince you to order it, the fact that this cake’s gluten free should.

5. Chocolate Chip Banana Cake

If this isn’t the ultimate comfort cake then I can personally take it off your hands. Not only does it contain banana bread, which hugs aching hearts and satisfies health-conscious brains, but this cake has chocolate as well. Chocolate chip banana cake’s the holy triad of ingredients that should get in your belly right now.

4. Red Velvet Cake

At this point, you need to look at some pictures of wholesome veggies in order to cleanse your palate for the final four Cogro cakes. Red velvet is currently the Apple product equivalent of dessert. Similar to all the i-influenced devices, red velvet in the form of cakes, cookies and pastries are the in-things.

It’s the age of red velvet desserts and everyone’s eating this cake up, so why aren’t you?

3. Brownie Chocolate Cheesecake

It isn’t that difficult to understand why this masterpiece comes in at number three. A quick batch of brownies themselves are enough to make dreadful group projects go on as smooth as buttery caramel.

It’s simply mind-blowing to think that this dessert doesn’t just choose to be a chocolate cake with brownies. It goes one step further and decides to be a cheesecake. What an inspirational cake.

2. Carrot Cake

Bugs Bunny and our parents would be proud of this cake’s standing. Maybe it’s the nourishing carrots embedded into the mix that makes this cake famous. On the other hand, the cream cheese probably makes the cake, because it’s hella good.

Whatever it is, this tried and true cake will always be there to please you. You can depend on it —unlike your ex— which is why you’re eating this cake in the first place.

1. Milky Way Cake

Here you have it folks. The long awaited cake of the minute: the Milky Way.

This cake’s obviously taken student taste buds on milk chocolate and caramel infused journeys. You probably want to go on this trip, preferably in a tricolour rocketship. I don’t blame you because this superstar of a dessert is definitely out of this world.

So if you haven’t started walking to CoGro right now to try one (or all) of these cakes, you should. You deserve it, sweetcakes.
