If you keep up with food trends, you know that a recent one has been Ruby Chocolate. This particular chocolate is distinguishable from regular milk, white or dark in both appearance (it's pink!) and flavor. It has only recently hit the market and everyone is dying to try it.

Ruby chocolate was invented in September 2017 by Barry Callebaut, making it a new phenomenon, and the process of making it is still a secret - all we know is that what makes it different is the ruby cocoa bean...

Kit Kat announced its launch of ruby chocolate but London's Fortnum and Mason beat them to it, launching their own ruby chocolate bar in April 2018, just before Kit Kat. I was lucky enough to get my hands on one at Heathrow Airport, and I was so excited I almost missed my flight. (Just kidding. I was pretty excited though.)

Look at this super fancy wrapper.

Looking at the front, it already seems really appealing. I was especially interested to see what it tastes like because I'd read about the mix of sweet and sour flavors, as well as a hint of berry, even though there is no berry in the actual mix.

Whoa, it's actually pink!

Taste Test

After looking at its beauty for a good 15 minutes, I finally decided to try some and...

I was disappointed.

I know, I'm sorry. It's just that I wasn't quite sure what to expect, but I thought it'd be something really different and honestly, it resembled a strawberry flavored white chocolate bar. I'm not saying that's bad, I'm just saying it's nothing new.

It was also really tart, with a smoother aftertaste. I honestly couldn't believe there were no berries in this because the berry flavor was really present. I don't think I would pair it with fruit or use it in baking, but it would be interesting to see what recipes ruby chocolate can be used for.

Rating: 5/10

In conclusion, I thought it was fun to try ruby chocolate, but would I buy it again? Probably not. If you're really into tart flavors and white chocolate then you should definitely try it, or if you're feeling adventurous - it is a very aesthetically pleasing bar.

Happy chocolate tasting!
