The Best Hunger Games Snacks To Eat While Reading ‘Sunrise on the Reaping’

The latest installment of the Hunger Games saga just released last month, and it certainly is taking the world by storm. Sunrise on the Reaping tells the story of the 50th Hunger Games, following Haymitch Abernathy (original protagonists Katniss Everdeen and Peeta Mellark’s mentor) through the Second Quarter Quell to his eventual win. With double the number of the regular 24 tributes due to a special rule in the Quarter Quell, Haymitch’s games proved to be more ruthless and brutal.

The Hunger Games relies on the idea that the Capitol must prove its power over the Districts by pulling the fruit of their resources and using fear to keep them in check. Those living in the Districts are struggling and starving, while those living in the Capitol live a life of leisure and luxury. It’s a difficult reality, but the Districts are constantly left searching for peace, money, and joy. Here is a list of Hunger Games-themed snacks to munch on while reading Sunrise on the Reaping.

Loaf of Bread

Bonus points if it’s slightly burnt. In the series’ first book, “The Hunger Games,” Peeta shows his first glimpse of affection towards Katniss by giving her a burnt loaf of bread, which was supposed to be fed to pigs. Peeta is severely scolded by his mother for doing so, but this loaf of bread practically saved Katniss and her family’s lives during a cold and poor hunting season. While you read “Sunrise on the Reaping,” grab a loaf that has a hard crust and a bit of scorch to commemorate the beginning of the dystopian saga’s roots.

Berries

In the 75th Games with Katniss and Peeta, there is a poisonous berry called nightlock planted in the arena. This berry proves to be critical to the plot: Katniss’ father taught her about it, Katniss saves Peeta from eating it, nightlock kills off one of the final tributes, and the pair nearly eat it together to defy the Gamemakers. Nightlock comes to represent rebellion and defiance. Although nightlock isn’t a real berry (and if it were, certainly don’t eat it) — munch on strawberries, blueberries, raspberries, or blackberries as an alternative.

Hot Cheetos

When you think of spicy chips, you probably think of Flamin’ Hot Cheetos. When you think of flames and the Hunger Games, you probably think of the series’ second installment, “Catching Fire.” Hot, tangy, and fiery red — Flamin’ Hot Cheetos are the perfect snack to keep you on your toes, similar to the suspense you feel while reading a Hunger Games book.

Nice! Trail Mix

Trail mix often closely resembles bird food, which recalls the ultimate symbol of rebellion and independence: the mockingjay. Additionally, trail mix is a popular camping food, and is probably the food version of wilderness and survival, core aspects of the Hunger Games. Nice! trail mix offers a host of delicious flavors, with options for both sugar and salt lovers. Try the Blueberry Pie Trail Mix for the perfect blend of savory and sweet.

Cheese & Crackers

In the series’ first prequel, “The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes,” a young Coriolanus Snow is the designated mentor for District 12 tribute Lucy Gray Baird. When the tributes are thrown into a zoo cage and put on display with no food, Snow brings Lucy Gray Baird some bread and cheese to keep her healthy for the Games. This food combo can be snack-ified by substituting in crackers, making it the ideal finger food. Pair Trader Joe’s Pita Bite Crackers with a softer cheese, like brie or goat cheese.
