The Five Item Shopping List

This article is written by a student writer from the Spoon University at Cornell chapter.

Ever go to the grocery store and feel overwhelmed by the choices? If you’re like me, your fridge at school is pretty small… and with limited capacity, you need to make sure you only buy the most essential ingredients. So, here is a list of the five foods you should make sure to have in your mini fridge at all times if you want to eat like a normal human being.

1) Frozen Strawberries

Whether you enjoy these delicacies in a morning smoothie or as a simple, delicious snack, frozen strawberries are the perfect item to have on hand. They don’t require any added preparation, and you can store them for a long time!

2) Spinach

For that quick, grab-and-go salad, simply pour these pre washed leaves into a bowl and drizzle on your favorite dressing! Or better yet, freeze the leaves when they start to wilt, and add them to your berry smoothie for an added healthy bonus.

3) Almond Milk

The perfect beverage to have on hand, use this item in your morning cereal, breakfast smoothie, or as a refreshing low-cal drink. Unlike regular milk, it also actually keeps well for a long time. If you’re looking for a healthier alternative, make sure to buy the unsweetened version!

4) Cherry Tomatoes

Add these to your spinach for an easy salad topper or just snack on them raw! You can even pop them in the microwave for about 20 seconds and mash them up for instant pasta sauce.

5) Bananas

If this isn’t the ultimate grocery store item, I don’t know what is. Eat your bananas as an on-the-go snack, freeze them to make your smoothies creamier, or sauté them in butter and sugar for the best dessert you’ve ever had. And when they start to go bad, save those mushy bananas for the perfect muffins or banana bread.
