The Most Common Appliance That You Actually Don’t Need

If you are a Ramen lover this post may not be for you.

Okay, confession time. If you saw this title and thought ‘oh, she is being conscientious of the horrible rays microwaves cause the body — how heroic,’ then you were wrong and I am sorry but I will make it up to you.

It’s much simpler (and more pathetic) than that. I don’t own a microwave because I just don’t think it’s worth it to buy one.

I haven’t owned one in college. One of my other roommates had always had one until now. My current roommate didn’t have one either so we just never got around to it. I guess we should probably buy a couch too but hey, times are tough for us college students.

But it’s not bad.

In fact, I love being microwave-less. I’ll tell you why and how you can ditch your microwave too.

1. It encourages me to always cook my own food

This takes time and I know that when I get home I need to set some of that time aside.

If I had a microwave, I would just heat whatever mac and cheese powder packages were in my pantry in less than two minutes. I am guilty of it in the past and I would do it again if I had a microwave. If I plan out my meals and the time they take, that means I spend less time freaking out about where I am going to get my next junky meal, which I usually overeat to cure my hunger fast.

Besides, let’s face it: unless you find a husband/wife who cooks you meals EVERY single night, or your parents do, you are going to need to learn how to do it yourself. It does not hurt to have a degree and know how to make a mean casserole.

2. I never buy processed food

I still buy canned goods but I cook them on the stove. At the grocery store I remember that I do not have a microwave to heat things in, so I don’t even bother with frozen meals. Now, I’ve spoiled myself with fresh food and anything else is just not as satisfying as when I make it myself.

3. Those rays ARE actually bad for the human body

Let’s compare the average microwave to our trusty oven. The oven heats up all around the food and cooks it thoroughly, where the microwave  just heats the water molecules inside the food. This is no bueno because when the molecules heat up through microwaves they begin to tear apart and deform the molecules in your food.

To give you a visual, a microwave is literally a box of radiation poisonous to the human body. It doesn’t have enough hertz to make your skin boil, but even the FDA says the microwave is bad because of the possibility of it leaking radiation.

A microwave is one of those appliances that you might have to worry about when you move into your new dorm for the semester or your first apartment. But without a microwave, I eat healthier, I enjoy my meals more and I get to pretend to be a chef every night which is way cooler than a thirty second meal from a box. Just trying to give you one less box to pack.

Recipes that Put the Stove in Stove top:

Stove Top Frittata fun to say and delicious

Oat-Rageous BreakfastsI like these because they encourage you to use stove-oats instead of microwavable oatmeal. SO much better!

Baked Mac and Cheese because you’re already using the stove. You might as well use the oven too.

How to Brew Iced Teayet another thing stoves are good for!
