So I guess this week I'm "convincing" my friends to taste test margaritas with me. In the world of tequilas, many smaller worlds exist. Do you want blanco, añejo, reposado, etc.? What about ingredients—mixto or 100% agave? With all these options, the tequila aisle can be a bit intimidating, so consider me your guide! I'm here to recommend the best tequilas for margaritas, judged on price, taste, and smoothness.

Diana Milton

Before we get into the liquor, I want to recommend my favorite brand of margarita mix, Tres Agaves. It's light, sweet, and refreshing. Really can't go wrong with it!

My taste palate: añejo girl, ALL THE WAY. I'll try to put my bias to the side, but the heart wants what it wants.

Now, onto the exciting stuff (the drinks)!

Maestro Dobel Añejo, $57.00

Diana Milton

I know the price is slightly scary, but you're really buying the absolute best. If you couldn't tell, this was my favorite of the bunch. It's super dark, which means it's really deep, and I could totally tell. This tequila perfectly complemented the margarita mix by giving a really deep backdrop.

Don Julio Añejo, $49.99

Diana Milton

Another painful price tag, but this is my family's tequila. It's the second darkest of the selection so there's no need to sacrifice the depth of the Maestro Dobel tequila. Don Julio brings a whole new level to your typical margarita. This margarita is super sweet and incredibly smooth, and I find it the perfect drink for a day spent in the sun.

Tequila Partida Añejo, $49.99

Diana Milton

Tequila Partida offers the perfect step into the world of añejo tequilas. It's dark enough for dark tequila lovers, but it's also very light with the same sharpness. Overall it's definitely one of the best tequilas for margaritas. You can taste the tequila's spice that works great with the margarita mix in making an overall sweet drink with a subtle end burn.

Espolón Blanco, $22.99

Diana Milton

This might just be my favorite tequila blanco. A really smooth margarita with a tiny kick, Espolón Blanco really brought out the lemon flavor of the margarita mix. But be warned: you can tell the tequila's there by the slight aftertaste. But if you're into the taste hanging around, definitely go for it.

Jose Cuervo Especial Silver, $26

Diana Milton

While I was browsing the tequila aisle, this tequila caught my eye. When most people think of tequila, they think of Jose Cuervo, so who would I be if I didn't include this in the roundup? At first, I was slightly thrown by the taste. This margarita is super unique, very musky while also very smooth. I really liked how you could also taste the tequila through the margarita—it eliminated the burn but kept the bite.

Honorable Mention: Goza Blanco, $27

I really tried to narrow my list down to five but I couldn't leave out Goza Blanco. This is one of the lightest tequilas I've ever tasted, so if you're just starting to get on board with margaritas this bottle is the perfect introduction.

And there we have it, five of the best tequilas for margaritas, perfect for beach days and nights out. If the price tags on some of these tequilas make you cringe, check out some of these amazing cheap tequilas instead. Cheers!
