7 Ridiculous Food Challenges You Can Actually Afford to Do

This article is written by a student writer from the Spoon University at Richmond chapter.

Do you live vicariously through Adam Richman on Man Vs. Food? Do you feel fulfilled after demolishing huge plates of food? Do you love free t-shirts and not breaking the bank? These outrageous food challenges aren’t easy, but they sure are delicious. Best part? You can actually afford them (unlike the 120oz., $250 steak challenge at Brand Steakhouse and Lounge’s in Las Vegas).

1. The Vermonster Sunday at Ben & Jerry’s

Although it may not be an official challenge, the Vermonster takes the gold for being the biggest serving of ice cream we’ve ever seen. This huge bucket is filled with 20—that’s right—20 scoops of ice cream, 4 bananas, hot fudge, caramel, nuts, and any toppings your heart desires. This bucket of happiness costs $39.99, but considering you will probably have to split it with at least 3 other people, $10 a person sounds like the perfect deal.

2. Pazza Bistro’s Inferno Pizza Challenge

The Inferno Pizza is covered in super-spicy sauce and Jalapeños, Habaneros, and Ghost peppers. If you can finish it in 20 minutes with only one tall glass of water to cool you down, you win free soda for life, a free t-shirt, your crying mug on the Wall of Flame, and 10-percent off your meal whenever you wear your winning t-shirt. Pretty sweet deal if you can handle the spice.

3. The Buffalo Wild Wings Blazin’ Challenge

Think you can handle the heat? For only $12.00, you can compete in the wings challenge of the nation. Eat a dozen chicken wings covered in “Blazin’” sauce in under six minutes and get a t-shirt and your photo on the wall of fame.

4. Tom + Chee Baker’s Dozen Challenge

If you like donuts and grilled cheese, this is the challenge for you. Although a bit on the pricier side, the challenge calls for eating a dozen cheese donuts in 10 minutes with one drink and no bathroom breaks.

At 7000 calories and a $50 price-tag, losing comes at a hefty price. But then again, if you win you get a t-shirt, a photo on their wall, and a dozen free donuts (along with a possible heart attack).

5.  El Pelon’s Annual Chili Eating Contest

If the Buffalo Wild Wings challenge wasn’t enough for you, then you’ve met your match. At this contest, a $30 entry fee and taste buds of steel can win you unlimited burritos for a whole year. A fellow Spoonie tried this challenge out, and while she didn’t get the year’s worth of free burritos, she did eat a whopping 22 chilis.

6. Bokamper’s Beast Burger Challenge

Pay nothing at all if you can win this battle. The opponent? A 3-pound burger with eight slices of bacon, four slabs of cheese, four farm-fresh fried eggs, and french fries. Plus, your winning smile on their wall of winners could be your claim to fame.

7. Jake’s Sandwich Board’s 5-Pound Philly Challenge

Think you can down 5 pounds of “all things Philly?” Then this is your battle. Scarf down a two-foot steak, a brisket or pork sandwich, four soft pretzels, twelve Tastykakes, two dozen Peanut Chews, and a Champ Cherry Soda to skip the bill. But if you can’t, you must pay $34, so you better come with a case of the munchies.

Counting the days until donuts pass as an acceptable lunch and dinner option.
