6 Legitimate Reasons You Should Try Oil Pulling

This article is written by a student writer from the Spoon University at UIUC chapter.

In a world filled with millions of beauty and health products, many people forget that sometimes a natural item can give you the exact same results as a man-made product.

One trend that is currently sweeping the health world is oil pulling. Before you start to think that one of the Kardashians/Jenners came up with this, know that this is not the case. Oil pulling is an oral therapy of Ayurvedic medicine that dates back 3,000 years.

The process of oil pulling is pretty simple. You simply swish about 1 tablespoon of oil, preferably coconut, sesame, or sunflower, in your mouth for about 20 minutes.

20 minutes a day can lead to these six benefits:

1. Whiter Teeth

Ditch the teeth whitening strips and pick up a jar of oil immediately. Oil has natural antibiotic and antiviral properties that clean and brighten your teeth without the use of harsh chemicals. For noticeable results, try swishing for two weeks.

2. Prevention of Illnesses

The mouth is always contracting germs since it is the main entrance to the inside of our bodies. By removing the toxins from the mouth, oil pulling kills off bacteria before it has a chance to spread throughout the rest of the body. Say goodbye to those annoying colds.

3. Increased Energy

With our immune system not having to do as much work to kill off harmful bacteria, our bodies have much more energy to function. 20 minutes of swishing oil in your mouth will make you feel 20 years younger (roughly).

4. Reduced Amount of Headaches

No more need for pain killers for those painful headaches. By reducing the amount of bacteria from entering the body, you’ll feel less stressed and be able to prevent headaches and migraines.

5. Better Oral Hygiene

Instead of handing someone a piece of gum when they have bad breath, give them oil instead. Oil pulling not only helps prevent bad breath but also decreases the chances of getting plaque and gingivitis.

6. Clearer Skin

No more piling on what feels like pounds of foundation to get that instant, airbrushed look. Removing toxins from your body by oil pulling allows the bloodstream to become free of such toxins and makes the skin become free of blemishes.

So clear out your medicine cabinets filled with all of your various bottles of pills, teeth whitening products, and other miscellaneous beauty products and stock up on your favorite oil. Although you won’t see results overnight, they will show over a short amount of time – and will be totally worth it.
