5 Healthy Carb Replacements You Need in Your Life

This article is written by a student writer from the Spoon University at FSU chapter.

I know you’re most likely thinking you don’t want to replace your carbs for the sake of all that is delicious and good in the world. Pancakes, pizza, and pasta are pretty much go-to foods whenever you want something tasty to hit your taste buds. However, this isn’t always the healthiest way to live. So whether your diet is gluten sensitive or you just want to integrate more health-conscious foods into your lifestyle make sure to try these out.

1. Oatmeal Pancakes

My roommates make these often and they are super simple to make. If gluten is something you would like to stay away from make sure the oats you use are labeled as certified-gluten-free so you know it isn’t cross contaminated with wheat, barley, or rye, as pure oatmeal is gluten free. Honestly the few ingredients makes it easier to make and store leftover batter for later. However these are also very good so you may not have leftovers… get the recipe here.

2. Zoodles

I was skeptical at first due to my intense love for pasta dishes, however zoodles definitely bring their own flavor and twist on dishes that are very satisfying. While zoodles have their limits due to being a vegetable rather than actual pasta, fixing them up in great recipes provides a meal that is healthy and so delicious you’ll almost forget you’re eating it in place of real pasta. Whole Foods sells pre-spiraled zoodles, however you can always spiral the zucchini yourself if you’re feeling extra ambitious and health conscious.

3. Cauliflower Pizza Crust

A veggie pizza piled high with lots of vibrant flavors such as peppers, herbs, squash, mushrooms, and all the veggies your heart desires hits the spot even with a crust made of cauliflower, and this pizza won’t make you feel like you have to run to the gym immediately after. Check out the recipe here and then sit back, relax, and enjoy the za.

4. Portabella Mushrooms

While portabella mushrooms often get big enough to be served as the burger replacement, I suggest using the portabella mushrooms as the bun to your burger. Whether a regular burger or a veggie burger this will add a very different texture and taste to the overall meal that won’t disappoint. Portabella mushrooms are low in calories and a good source of dietary fiber and protein, so your meal will be just as filling as it is tasty.

5. Collard Green Wraps

Initially, these may not sound as appetizing as the rest, but they’re actually very good and fun to make as well. Since you are just using the collard greens to wrap up the insides there really isn’t a limit to what you put in your wrap, however make sure to check out these recipes for some inspiration and truly great eats.
