This article is written by a student writer from the Spoon University at Skidmore chapter.

The food industry is no longer a mystery. It’s easier than ever to learn about where exactly your food comes from and how the American food system has an effect on your health and the environment.

As a documentary enthusiast, I have watched numerous food-related documentaries over the years, but these are by far some of the best, most thought-provoking food documentaries out there that are sure to change the way you view food.

Your mind will be blown by the insight this documentary has into the diet industry and the revolutionary information it offers about eating healthfully. The experts interviewed in this film advocate for a raw foods diet.

Regardless of whether or not you are into that kind of thing, the documentary is fascinating and features some of the biggest names in the health and nutrition scene including Kris Carr, Dr. Alejandro Junger, Dr. Jonathan Mercola, Jon Gabriel, Jamie Oliver, and more. You will hear from individuals who have become victim to the food industry and how they were able to turn their lives around.

Katie Couric’s long anticipated documentary is here and it’s tackling America’s sugar addiction. While watching this documentary may make you want to give up sugar for a while, it’s for the best. Unfortunately most American’s are addicted to sugar, and it’s likely that you are too. It’s not all your fault, though. Did you know that 80 percent of all food items sold in America have added sugar?

Since sugar has been proven to be as addictive as cocaine, this is pretty dangerous. With obesity rates skyrocketing despite efforts to manufacture “light,” “low-fat” and “low-calorie” versions of America’s favorite foods, it is clear that the way we have approached this epidemic isn’t working.

Michael Pollan, Mark Hyman, Gary Taubes, Mark Bittman, and other influential health experts make appearances in this documentary. Even Bill Clinton is featured to share his opinions on America’s sugar addiction.

Cowspiracy

This documentary not only has an intriguing title, but offers insight into the agricultural industry and it’s devastating impact on our environment. Spoiler alert: cows (and other livestock) collectively produce 51 percent of global greenhouse gas emissions (!!!). Surprisingly, leading environmental organizations deny this fact and have largely ignored addressing the agricultural sector when it comes to combating climate change.

Watch the film to find out why. Plus, you will be able to shock your friends with your newfound knowledge of the meat and dairy industry. Beware, some of the information in this film may shock you, but it is nonetheless important and backed by science. And as if you needed another reason to watch Cowspiracy, Leonardo DiCaprio just happens to be the executive producer of the film, NBD…

As it is stated in the film, “nothing changes the planet as much as the way we eat.” Three men have made it their life’s mission to figure out exactly how we should be eating to save the planet and our health.

Learn how Dr. T. Colin Campbell figured out how to turn cancer cells on and off by altering animal protein intake, how Dr. Caldwell Esselstyn used diet to treat and heal heart disease patients, and about Dr. Gidon Eshel’s investigations into how our food choices can impact global climate change.
