Everyone knows Ann Arbor is the best food town in all the land. There are some staples that everyone loves, like sandwiches from Zingerman’s, brunch from Angelo’s, cheesy bread from pizza house, etc. Over the summer, it can be hard to part with your favorite Ann Arbor eats, but for most of the wonderful food Ann Arbor has to offer, you can find close replacements to them at home.
For example, Domino’s has cheesy bread. Is it as good as Pizza House? No, but it is there if you need to indulge (which we all do sometimes). However, there are a few things that you can really only get in Ann Arbor, making the summers spent away from our hoMe that much harder.
1. Chipati at Pizza Bob’s
I swear, my mom only comes to visit me for the Chipatis. No, but actually. Starting in 1974, Pizza Bob’s blessed the world with a salad in a giant, fluffy pita, topped with a delicious secret sauce, and honestly, what could be better?
SpoonTip: They are 100x better at Pizza Bob’s than at Pizza House.
2. Frita at Frita Batidos
Although you may say you can find an equally good burger somewhere else, I challenge you to find a place that serves these cuban-style burgers topped with cheese, fries, egg, cilantro-lime salsa, tropical slaw and avocado. Although, since Frita Batidos isn’t the best place for our waistlines, it’s probably best that we spend the summer months without it.
3. Hippie Hash at Fleetwood Diner
At Fleetwood, you can get this delicious combination at any hour of the day or night. Hippie Hash is homemade hash browns topped with two eggs, grilled green pepper, onion, tomato, broccoli, mushroom and feta cheese. I’ve had other kinds of hash, but none compare to Hippie Hash. There’s something about the way the runny eggs mix with the cheese, veggies and hash browns that make this a truly unique experience.
4. Muffin Delight at Afternoon Delight
Yes, you can find muffins and frozen yogurt basically anywhere, but can you find a warm muffin topped with frozen yogurt? If the answer to that question is yes, please contact me with the information of that place. But, seriously, Muffin Delights are awesome and thoroughly missed by most throughout the summer.
5. Fishbowls at Good Time Charley’s
Last, but certainly not least: Fishbowls from Charley’s. Although it’s not technically a food, Charley’s made the cut because it has a special place in all of our hearts. In addition to the rotating specials, there are 34 different drinks to choose from, and with their massive size and variety, Fishbowls remain unlike anything else.
