Everyone struggles with their hair. Whether it’s too dry or oily, it always seems like there’s a problem. If you’re like me, you can’t always afford the really nice shampoos with words like “hydration” and “revitalized” splashed across the front.

Luckily, there are tons of everyday foods that are amazing for your hair. So next time you’re looking to save yourself a trip to the salon, try one these homemade remedies.

1. Honey

Honey is great for us who struggle with thick coarse hair. According to an article on healthguidance.org, honey contains a lot of vitamins and minerals that are good for your overall health, but amazing for your hair. Also, honey can retain water, making it an effective moisturizer.

All you need to do is mix 2 tablespoons of honey with 1/3 cup of olive oil and let it soak in your hair for a good 20-30 minutes. When you’re done, your hair will look shiny and new.

2. Avocado

Not only is avocado delicious, but it’s pretty amazing for your hair too. When mixed with coconut milk, avocados actually help seal and heal all the dead ends.

All you have to do is mix together one mashed avocado with one cup of coconut milk, cover the tips of your hair in the paste, and let it sit for 15 minutes. Then shampoo and condition per usual.

3. Eggs

According to a post on My Natural Hair Growth, a blog which focuses on the best ways to manage your hair, eggs are rich in protein and, therefore, reinforce the protein that makes up our hair due to their similar structure. In addition, egg yolks are loaded with lethicin, a fatty substance that is great for moisturizing your hair.

Simply whip up some eggs and let them soak in your hair for 20 minutes to an hour. When you’re done, you won’t believe the results. If you’re feeling extra adventurous, try mixing in lemon juice and olive oil to create the ultimate DIY conditioner.

4. Yogurt

Run out of conditioner? Use plain full-fat yogurt, they’re basically the same thing.

5. Baking Soda

Baking soda is great for helping to remove excess build-up in your hair.

Simply add 2 tablespoons of baking soda to 3 cups of water. After shampooing, rinse hair with the baking soda solution. For optimal results, rinse hair once a week.

6. Beer

Beer’s not only good for getting you and your friends completely blasted, it’s also great for your hair. According to beautyglimpse.com, beer not only acts as a cleaning agent, but it strengthens your hair as well. Because beer is rich in protein, it helps repair hair that has been damaged by heat and chemicals. The malt also makes your hair less frizzy by helping to seal the dead ends.

If you’re looking to gradually lighten your hair, beer is definitely the option for you.

7. Brown Sugar

So we all know that brown sugar can be used to make a kick-ass facial scrub, but did you know that it’s also great for your hair?

Mix it with honey and evenly spread throughout your hair. Then, when you let it soak and rinse it out, your hair will never be the same. Bonus: It’s all sugar so you know it tastes delicious.

8. Bananas

Bananas helps keep hair soft and smooth. According to an article on US News, bananas are actually one of the best foods for your hair. They contain the mineral silica which actually helps you grow thicker, healthier hair. Bananas are basically a must-have for healthy hair.

9. Cornstarch

Got greasy roots? Just rub in some cornstarch to absorb all the excess oil in your hair. It works like a charm, leaving hair looking clean and ready to go.

10. Maple Syrup

If you have dry hair, you need to be using maple syrup. Pour the maple syrup over your dry hair and let it soak for 20 minutes. It’ll moisturize the hell out of your hair, leaving it smooth and wonderful.

11. Apple Cider Vinegar

If you can get over the initial smell, apple cider vinegar can be amazing for your hair. If you’re currently struggling with dandruff, then apple cider vinegar is the perfect solution.

12. Carrots

While many people know that carrots are great for your eyes, not many know that they can actually be good for your hair too. Carrot juice is loaded with vitamin A, which is great for a healthy scalp. In addition, carrot juice is very effective on relaxed or permed hair.

13. Spinach

Spinach is amazing for your hair. Because it’s packed with A and C vitamins, which help stimulate growth, spinach actually helps keep your hair from falling out. Mix it with oil and put it on your hair like a mask  you won’t regret it.
