Before it was a borg, it was a mixy, and before that, it was jungle juice. But like all things, it evolved. When people started “borging” at my university, I was confused, but not by the concept, but rather the name. Borg has been happening for a long time across college campuses, but has now blown up on TikTok with #Borg having 67 million views and everyone wants to know what it is.

#SpoonTip: No matter what you're drinking, make sure to always drink responsibly. Spoon does not promote binge or underage drinking.

What is a borg?

Borg, short for blackout rage gallon, is a gallon jug of water partially dumped out and replaced with hard liquor with flavoring like LiquidIV or MiO. Pro tip: don’t waste the water. Put it in a cup placed next to your bed for later that night and/or the next morning. You’ll thank me later!

Why are college students drinking borg?

You may think the borg sounds gross or a little scary, and you may be right, but it’s actually a big improvement from the millennial days of communal jungle juice. The borg is a great option for going out as they’re customizable and easily sealable. The worry of someone slipping something into your drink is gone because you have your borg on you at all times. It's also delicious because it’s whatever liquor and flavoring YOU like and are far more hydrating than your usual jungle juice. They also have less sugar, so the hangovers are nowhere near as bad as you’d expect them to be.

Borgs being so customizable makes them so appealing to Gen Z as there are no rules. You could add a Celsius to keep you going all day or LiquidIV for hydration or MiO for electrolytes and vitamins or honestly, add all three.

And if you’re somebody who doesn’t drink, add MiO to a gallon jug of water, and you have an easy “mocktail” for the day to hang with your friends and you’ll have just as much fun. Plus, you’ll get no pressure asking why you aren’t drinking.
