By the ripe age of 2 ¾ we’ve all pretty much figured out that caramelized onions taste good on everything (yeah, even Play-Doh). Unfortunately, Mom’s culinary skills taught us that properly making these little strings of mouthwatering heaven takes at least an hour.
Well, what happens when you’re a college student and have exams and papers and projects and piles of stats homework and just want to make yourself a burger with some f*cking caramelized onions on it??
Hell yeah, now you do! In just ten minutes you can create a whole skillet full of golden onions to put on top of everything for dayzz. And what’s better? There are two ways to make the magic happen. Eat up, Spoonies.
Option 1: Add Baking Soda
Prep Time: 1 minute
Cook Time: 10 minutes
Total Time: 11 minutes
Servings: 1-3
Ingredients:
2 cups sliced Vidalia or yellow onions, ¼ inch thick
2 teaspoons vegetable oil
Pinch baking soda (no more than 1/8 teaspoon)
½ teaspoon salt
Directions:
1. Heat a large skillet on medium and add oil. Add onions and sprinkle with baking soda.
2. Cook, stirring constantly until golden to deep brown, about ten minutes.
3. Stir in salt just before plating.
Option 2: First, Dry Heat
Prep Time: 1 minute
Cook Time: 10 minutes
Total Time: 11 minutes
Servings: 1-3
Ingredients:
2 cups sliced Vidalia or yellow onions, ¼ inch thick
2 teaspoons vegetable oil
½ teaspoon salt
Directions:
1. Heat a large skillet on medium and add onions.
2. Cook onions, stirring constantly until browned, about 5 minutes.
3. Add oil and salt.
4. Sauté until softened in some areas and crisp in others, about 5 minutes.
5. Serve while still warm, crispy and mouthwateringly delicious.
