Ch-ch-ch-no, we’re not eating the plants shaped like famous celebrities, but we are eating the seeds that produce these plants. Have no fear, though, by eating chia seeds, you will not turn into a leafy green plant. Chia seeds actually reap numerous other benefits.

Chia seeds come from the Mexican desert plant Salvia hispanica and are packed with nutrients. One tablespoon of these itty-bitty seeds contains 5 grams of fiber and 3 grams of protein. Additionally, chia seeds pack high amounts of omega-3, which combined with the fiber and protein, they will keep you fuller for a longer period of time. Chia seeds don’t lack on vitamins and minerals either; they’re a good source of potassium, calcium, phosphorus, magnesium and manganese.

Try out the trend for yourself. Watch the magic of chia seeds by adding a spoonful to a glass of water, then wait for a few minutes. These lil’ seeds will transform your glass of water into a gel. Want a sweet fruit flavored infusion? Try the Mexican drink, “chia fresca,” and add a spoonful of chia seeds to fruit juice. If you’re apprehensive about the trend, start by sprinkling seeds on smoothies, yogurt or in batters. If you’re already a chia seed fanatic, try this super nutritious pudding or make ’em savory with these chia seed meatballs.
