7 Unusual Ways To Hack Haggis

This article is written by a student writer from the Spoon University at St Andrews chapter.

If the traditional serving of haggis, neeps and tatties doesn’t appeal to you, don’t worry. There are so many more less ordinary, more adventurous, and maybe even tastier ways to give haggis a go (’cause when in Scotland…).

1. Scottish Breakfast

Bacon, eggs, sausage, black pudding, beans, haggis and toast: the world’s best hangover cure. Sure, an English breakfast will do, but only a Scottish one will help you forget just how many drinks you bought for that stranger at the bar last night.

2. Haggis Bon Bons

A bit more classy: bites of haggis, covered in breadcrumbs and fried. These are something to pass around at a cocktail party. And better yet, it’s really not that hard to make them yourself (serve with a whiskey sauce or marmalade).

3. Haggis Supper

A fish supper is an undeniable guilty pleasure. So why not mix things up and give the haggis equivalent a go? It’s still covered in batter, and still comes with chips.

 4. Pizza

Let’s be real, you can throw pretty much anything on a pizza and it’s still going to taste good. So why not spice up the norm with a sprinkling of haggis? You can actually pick one of these up at your local Sainsbury’s or, if you’re a dab hand at pizza-making, try it yourself.

5. Chicken Balmoral

Another classy alternative. It’s your ordinary chicken, but with a rich, haggis centre.

6. Nachos

Nachos: a delicacy we all know and love. We’re comfortable with nachos, so, if you’re a first-timer, they might be just the thing to ease you in.

7. Just Another Burger Topping

Cheese, bacon, chili, pulled pork… just add haggis to the list. A burger with everything, please.

Team any of these with a can of irn-bru or better yet, a bit o’ buckie, and you will have experienced most of what Scotland has to offer. ‘Cause, you know… You can’t visit Scotland without giving haggis a go at least once, right?
