Chocoholics rejoice: Max Brenner has reopened with a new look and a few new innovative menu items. NYU Spoon recently got a first look into the newly renovated space and got to taste some of the new confections Max Brenner is churning out.

Located in the heart of Union Square, this chocolate haven is one of forty locations worldwide. Aside from offering delectable desserts and chocolate pastries, the restaurant also serves lunch and dinner. Katzie Guy-Hamilton, Max Brenner’s executive chef, said the menu changes were made to keep the concept fresh and exciting.

Savory waffle sandwiches are a new addition to the menu and served in two ways: a cheesesteak waffle with caramelized onions and a special 5-cheese sauce and a pressed Cubano—turkey, ham, prosciutto and sweet pickles, finished with melty provolone cheese. Both sandwiches are served on fluffy homemade waffles.

A coconut cream pie milkshake is also new to the menu. Max Brenner’s milkshakes, which are served in their signature “Alice cup,” which bears the words “Drink Me,” are a delicious way to drink your sweets. Made with coconut cream, dulce de leche ice cream and banana, it’s a thick, creamy treat that will satisfy any coconut lover.

Also new is a fried dough dessert, which features a giant piece of fried dough (perfect for sharing!) topped with chocolate ice cream, chocolate chunks, pieces of toffee and a milk chocolate ganache. Guy-Hamilton, the mastermind behind this dangerously delicious dessert, recommends pulling a piece off and wrapping it around all the toppings to ensure a delicious bite.

For those who don’t have time to sit at a table or the chocolate bar yet still want to indulge, Max Brenner’s expanded “Fast Max” counter offers baked goods – such as brownies and muffins – and a variety of chocolate and drinks that can be had on the go.

Its close proximity to campus makes Max Brenner a great place to go for a study break or a pick-me-up in between classes. Max Brenner is also a great place to take a date, celebrate a birthday with a large group, or just enjoy a sweet evening with friends.
