6 Things Everyone Who Grew Up in North Carolina Should Know

This article is written by a student writer from the Spoon University at Clemson chapter.

I was born and raised in North Carolina and grew up with food culture that continues to thrive. From fresh-brewed sweet tea to Bojangles, you can’t go wrong whenever you’re in The Tar Heel State.

Pepsi originated in New Bern, NC and Cheerwine started up in Salisbury, NC. If you haven’t tried either, you don’t know what you’re missing.

2. Lexington, NC has the best barbecue, period

The only place to find good barbecue is in Lexington, NC, and you’re going to want to order plenty of it. Not only do you receive fast service here, but you’re going to fall in love with the hush puppies.

3. Sweet Tea > Unsweetened Iced Tea

Sweet tea is a staple not only in North Carolina, but everywhere in the South. Served with extra lemon, it’s a refreshing drink for any season.

Sorry Dunkin’, but North Carolinians are forever faithful to the one and only Krispy Kreme, born and raised in Salem, NC. The “Hot Now” light is just too irresistible for anyone passing by.

5. “All the way” only means one thing

There’s only one way to order a hotdog: topped with chili, slaw, mustard, and onion. Also known as a “Slaw Dog,” no one ever gets tired of this favorite served with warm steamed bun.

6. Bojangles is always the answer

Originating in Charlotte, NC, Bojangles is the answer to any craving. Perfect for any family gathering or football tailgate, you just can’t get enough of everyone’s favorite chicken, fries, and biscuits.
