Oscar-Worthy Snacks to Accompany This Year’s Oscar-Nominated Films

This article is written by a student writer from the Spoon University at Chapel Hill chapter.

From concession stand candy to the lesser-welcomed food products you managed to smuggle into the theater, snacks are the perfect complement to any movie-watching experience. So when it comes to the Oscars this February 22nd, it’s only right that your viewing party is accompanied by snacks that pay tribute to your favorite silver screen nominees. Ditch the bowl of popcorn and hit up the kitchen this February 22nd to prove that you’re a #truefan of your favorite nominated movies. Throw out the rotten tomatoes- on this day, it’s all about the crème de la crème.

It’s the future. Earth is turning to dust, Matthew McConaughey is in space and okra and corn are the last two crops we have. What can we do?  Grab all the okra you can and fry this stuff up like it’s going out of season! Because, like, it is the last season.  But no worries, Matthew McConaughey will save the day. Or Murph. Or beings …that are actually us?…

Whoever it is, dish up the okra already, because we’re starving.  Literally.

Gobble up your 90’s kid nostalgia with some Go-Gurt, Gushers, Hi-C, and maybe a snack pack or two. If you’re really dedicated, order some Dunkaroos online (they’re discontinued) and give your taste buds a true ~BlaSt fR0m th3 pAsT~!

How to Train Your Dragon 2

In honor of the Vikings, make a sweet home brew of mead (the viking’s drink of choice). Bonus points if you drink it out of a drinking horn. Pour one out for Toothless and drink away your sorrows when you realize you will never quite experience the beautiful bond that is shared between a boy and his dragon.

Serve up a healthy portion of Gold Ole’ Raisins and Peanuts in honor of Reese’s performance as Cheryl Strayed and her inspiring 1,100 mile solo hike. Don’t forget to wash down the sweet-and-saltiness by licking off the sweet, sweet dew from your nearest outdoor tent. If Reese did it, shouldn’t we all?

Grand Budapest is up for nominations in a plethora of categories, but if “best dessert” was an Oscar category, we all know it would undoubtedly win with Mendl’s Courtesan au Chocolat. Making these petite cakes will require some serious baking skills, but luckily Fox Searchlight has you covered with this adorable, Wes Anderson-esque how-to video.

Big Hero 6

Who didn’t want to go to San Fransokyo when watching Big Hero 6? In honor of Hiro’s big bro Tadashi, whip up some of Aunt Cass’s infamous “melt-your-face-off” chicken wings. Not just any chicken wings will suffice—the moms of the internet have got you covered with this recipe.

We’ll accept chicken frito pie from a near stranger any day. Dig into this intriguing comfort food and take your mind off of your potentially-dead (potentially-missing?) significant other. If pie isn’t enough, there’s no hole in the heart that junk food can’t stuff right up. Or crème brûlée, but you might want to hold on tight, especially since Neil Patrick Harris (hosting the Oscars) will be in the vicinity…

Eat any of these Oscar-worthy snacks to support your favorite nominees and the movie gods will shine down upon thee. Even if the movies you root for don’t win February 22nd, at the end of the night, you’re the one who gets to take the cake/okra/chicken frito pie home. We are not the judges! On this night, we’ll leave that up to the Academy.
