19 Foreign Twists of American Snacks That You Need to Try

This article is written by a student writer from the Spoon University at Hamilton chapter.

The United States is well known to have a variety of junk foods that are chock full of fat, sugar, and sodium. From potato chips to soda, the popularity of American snack foods has spread around the world. This has resulted in some unique—and maybe sometimes a bit bizarre—flavors. While Americans obsess over flavors like barbecue and sour cream & onion, the rest of the world has gotten pretty creative with their own renditions of American snack foods. We’ve compiled a list of just some of the foreign flavors of American snack foods from around the world. (Caution: The following may seem strange to even the most adventurous snacker).

Who doesn’t love Oreos? It’s America’s favorite cookie, and these countries certainly have done an awesome job with getting creative with them. I’d certainly love to try these out with a glass of cold milk:

  • Orange Ice Cream (Indonesia)
  • Green Tea Ice Cream (China)
  • Dulce de Leche (Chile)

A lot of foreigners can’t seem to understand why Americans love Cool Ranch so much. With these unique flavors, it isn’t all that surprising why they wouldn’t be that psyched about ranch.

  • Olives (France)
  • Tandoori (India)
  • Stir-Fry (China)
  • Steak (Japan)

Fanta

“Wanta Fanta, don’t you wanna?”

  • Watermelon (Greece)
  • Cantaloupe (Egypt)
  • Apple and Pear (Iran)

Remember that these are only some of the many different flavors of American snacks around the world. There’s a huge variety of flavors out there, you’ll just have to go out and try them for yourself.
