In a town full of bars, it only makes sense that there are tons of options for post-going out food. There’s your standard pizza places (NYPD, South U Pizza, Cottage Inn, Pizza House, and Back Room), your classic sandwich/burger joints (Jimmy John’s, Hunter House, and BurgerFi), and your staple Mexican food spots (BTB Burrito and Pancheros), and then, there’s Fleetwood.
But, what is Fleetwood Diner?
Fleetwood Diner is an Ann Arbor staple, and it’s been open 24/7 since 1949. Fleetwood is known for their hippy hash, which is a hash brown dish topped with grilled onions, tomatoes, broccoli, green peppers, mushrooms, and feta. It comes with toast and your choice of two eggs (any style). Fleetwood is the ultimate spot for late night food (and hungover brunch), and I’m here to tell you why.
1. It’s open 24 hours
This one is pretty self-explanatory. Fleetwood is ready and waiting for whenever you decide to call it quits at the bar/party.
2. It’s cheap AF
For $7.29, you can get two eggs any style, your choice of breakfast meat (sausage, bacon, or ham), hash browns, AND toast and jelly. It’s a meal that will fill you up and keep you satisfied throughout the next morning. Or, you can go get two specialty slices from NYPD for $6.98 and secretly wish you got a third. The choice is yours. I choose not to be hungry.
3. They serve food that will prevent a hangover
Okay, so excuse the science, but alcohol puts your body in a low blood sugar state. By fueling your body with protein (eggs) carbs (toast), and potassium (breakfast potatoes), your body is able to help the alcohol detox process happen faster. GOALS.
4. There are options for your dairy-free, gluten-free, vegan friend
There is nothing worse than going out with your dairy free, gluten free, vegan friend who doesn’t want to get food at the end of the night because “there’s nothing for them to eat there.” Well, at Fleetwood, you’ll never have that problem. They serve eggs for your dairy free, gluten free friends and hippie hash (hold the eggs) for your vegan friends.
5. They have outdoor seating
This is perfect for your friend who is too nauseous to walk/uber home and needs to sit down and take a break. This is also perfect for your friend who, for some reason, believes 3 am is an awesome time to people watch. This is not perfect for a freezing February night, but let’s be real, those nights are spent watching Netflix in bed with take-out, so you won’t even have to confront this problem.
Next time you find yourself in the Main Street area late at night, make sure to check out Fleetwood Diner. Honestly, even if you’re nowhere near the Main Street area after your night out, you should still make the trip just to end your evening at Fleetwood—and hey, maybe even convince your friends to do something other than go to Skeep’s. Check out Rush, Circus, Mash, or another Main Street bar. It’ll just put you that much closer to the real destination of the night: Fleetwood.
