The Best Celebrity Owned Restaurants College Students Can Actually Afford

This article is written by a student writer from the Spoon University at U Mich chapter.

Many celebrities have been expanding their empires and venturing into the restaurant business. However, the majority of these A-list stars have opened chic restaurants with pricey menus. Take Robert De Niro’s Nobu where, yes, it might be fairly easy to spot a celeb or two, but it’s much more difficult to spot something on the menu that is under $20. We know it’s exciting to go to celebrity owned restaurants (even if it is just for the name), so use this list to find a few affordable spots owned by your favorite stars.

Wahlburgers owned by Mark Wahlberg

This fast casual burger spot is owned by Chef Paul Wahlberg and brothers Mark & Donnie Wahlberg. You won’t be needing to save up to go here, as almost everything on the menu is under $10 and includes everything from burgers, to sandwiches, to salads and beyond.

There are locations all throughout the country, and A&E even produced a reality TV show called WahlburgersReleased in 2014, they are still making new episodes, giving viewers a behind-the-scenes look at what goes on when the family tries to manage these restaurants.

Chef Flay has quite the empire. From hosting numerous award-winning Food Network shows, to owning countless restaurants throughout the country, to hosting a weekly radio show and authoring over a dozen cookbooks, he really has done it all. His burger joint, which has 19 locations in 11 states (including two on the University of Pennsylvania campus and one on the University of Maryland campus), has a vibe that’s similar to Shake Shack.

You find your own table and get your own drinks, but the food is delivered by waiters. The menu and prices are similar to that of Wahlburgers, affordable but hosts endless options of burgers, shakes and more.

#SpoonTip: If you’re in rush and can’t stay, you can place your order online to be picked up and taken to-go.

Located in his home state of New Jersey, JBJ Soul Kitchen is a part of Jon Bon Jovi’s charity, Soul Foundation, which helps the homeless. There are no prices on the menu and no reservations accepted. You pay (only in cash) what you can, and all of the items are healthy and locally grown.

At the beginning of the year, the restaurant achieved its goal of having 51% of their diners paying and 49% of their diners in-need. Enjoy a good meal here, while also supporting an even better cause.

You won’t need to break the bank if you want a taste of this celebrity chef’s breakfast, sandwiches or salads, as almost everything on the menu is under $10. This spot is perfect for a quick bite or an on-the go snack.
