8 Best Drunk Food Places in Oakland Serving More Than Just Pizza

This article is written by a student writer from the Spoon University at PITT chapter.

It’s past midnight. You’ve been drinkin’, you’ve been drinkin’…but you only have $10 in your pocket, and like your wallet, but not particularly your waistline (of which you could care less about in the heat of the moment), your patience is running thin. As if your night couldn’t get more complicated, you and your (taste) buds aren’t in the mood for pizza.

You’ve been thinkin’, you’ve been thinkin’…yinz want something just as equally greasy and unhealthily satisfying. (Why can’t you keep your fingers off it, baby?)

Thankfully, you’ve read this article beforehand to combat this recurring dilemma and impress your friends. Here are just a few suggestions as to where to go if you ever find yourself in such a situation.

Located on Semple Street, it’s hands-down one of the top drunk food places in South Oakland. You can order online for pick-up or for delivery ($10 minimum). What it’s best known for is its mouth-watering, delectable subs. You can’t go wrong with any of its featured subs, from The Campus Cheesesteak to The Chicken Parmesean.

Despite its name and its notorious status as the home of the $30, 30” King-Kong Pizza, it offers cheese fans tasty alternatives to pizza like subs, bacon cheese fries and mozzarella sticks. For cheaper bites, I would stick to the starters on the menu.

Forbes Gyro

Located on Forbes (hence the name), this food joint offers a variety of selections such as gyros, kebabs, and Hershey’s Ice Cream. Added bonus: Get the full food-pyramid nutritional benefit with a salad served on the side with the kebab. Side Note: If you bring some of the goodies back to your place, it might smell like hummus for at least two days.

“Chicken on a Stick”

cheap

Location: Corner of Semple Street and Ward Street Pittsburgh PA, 15213
Hours of Operation: Around 9pm-2am

A hidden gem located on the corner of Semple Street and Ward Street, deep in South Oakland. The owners don’t have a business name for their food joint and work under mysterious hours, usually on Friday and Saturday nights. What’s especially enticing of this chicken on a stick is that it’s under an awe-inspiring spotlight for everyone to see as they pass by that corner. This kebab-reminiscent chicken is offered with various dips, some of the notable ones being teriyaki sauce and “yum-yum” sauce.

Most often overlooked during the daytime, warm, cheesy Doritos Loaded®, meat and cheese-filled Go-Go Taquitos® and Big Bite® hot dogs with chili, cheese and/or onion toppings are hot, fresh and ready for grabs.
