The Best Apple Picking Boston Has To Offer

This article is written by a student writer from the Spoon University at Northeastern chapter.

Now that the fall season is upon us, it’s time to bust out the winter clothes, and more importantly, it’s time to start the fall baking. For many of us, going apple picking is a family tradition and making apple pie signifies the start of the colder months.

Why go to the grocery store and buy apples when you could go with family or friends to an apple orchard. Going to the apple orchard is a full day of fun plus you get to pick all the apples you could ever need and more. When it comes to apple picking, you can never have too many.

Just because you are a college student in Boston does not mean you have to miss out on the yearly apple picking experience. Russell Orchards has you covered! Russell Orchards is about an hour’s drive from Boston and is a great excuse to take a fun impromptu road trip with your friends. Going to their orchard is more than just apple picking. From apple cider doughnuts to cute farm animals, Russell Orchards has it all.

During the summer seasons, they sell a variety of fruits and vegetables such as strawberries, cherries, and squash. Unlike the vegetables, almost all of the fruits they sell are also “pick your own.” This allows you to go fruit picking year round! Get some apples in the fall and strawberries in the summer.

In addition to the “pick your own” feature, they also have a small store on-site that sells fresh produce as well as delicious apple cider. It doesn’t get much better than this. Oh wait, it does! They use their delicious homemade apple cider to make the absolute best apple cider doughnuts. Made fresh every day, the apple cider doughnuts are highly worth the wait and one hour drive.

Russell Orchards offers a wide variety of apples to pick from. I had the chance to pick from rows and rows of Gala, Mcintosh, Honey Crisp, Cortland, and Empire apples. All of which were delicious. Each group of 5 is required to purchase a 10-pound bag for $25 but that allows you to fill it up to your heart’s desire. After going to Russell Orchards you will have enough apples to last you the entire season. Having so many apples allows you to make an absolutely scrumptious apple crumb cake. Super easy, super delicious, and great use of all those apples.

After picking apples, don’t go home yet! Russell Orchards also has a ton of the cutest farm animals. You can’t leave without saying hi to Darryl the pig, AKA the star of the show.

In addition to Darryl, there are horses, geese, goats, and even a donkey! Last, but not least, don’t forget to take a cute Instagram photo in their pumpkin patch. If you are up to it, you can even take one home with you to decorate your dorm.

Even after apple picking season is over, Russell Orchards is still a great place for some fall-time fun. Make this your new yearly tradition and make sure you go this fall to get yourself the BEST apple cider doughnuts!
