As I glanced at my Google Calendar that I had meticulously set up at the beginning of the semester (and then proceeded to never look at again), I was horrified by the bold words on the screen: MIDTERM. If you’re anything like me, you might be a little bit behind on watching your lectures. If you are like me, then you also can’t study without stuffing your face with carbs and sugar. Since I’m currently living in Asia, here are my recommendations for the top 7 Asian snacks guaranteed to get you through midterm season.
1. Cadina French Fries
Hear me out: French fries, but in chip form. It sounds crazy, I know, but they taste even better than the real thing. These fries have the perfect amount of crunch, and then they melt in your mouth. They are a staple in my home, and my family and I fight each other for the last bag every time. They come in a variety of flavors; the truffle flavor is my favorite—perfect for feeling bougie at 3 am while crying over chemistry.
2. I-Mei Puffs
I’m obsessed with cream puffs, so you can imagine my delight when I discovered this dainty snack. Although they don’t have the same airy texture as their original pastry counterpart, these puffs exceeded all my expectations. I used to share packs of these with my friends while “studying” (we were watching Netflix).
3. Salted Egg Fish Skin
The idea of eating salted eggs or fish skin might be strange to some people (not to mention a combination of both); however, this snack is different. I don’t have the words to properly explain it, but if you ate this, you would understand. If you want to try salted eggs in different forms, here are some dishes that they appear in.
4. Calbee Potato Chips
I have to admit: I used to sneak these into the library all the time. I’m sorry, but that’s how irresistible they are. These chips come in a lot of different flavors, and the hot & spicy is great for anyone who likes to suffer. I’m dependent on the salt & seaweed flavor to keep me alive while I study (but it does leave tiny seaweed flakes on my notes—oops).
5. I-Mei Gummy Choco Ball
Chocolate-covered gummy balls. Gummy balls covered in chocolate. What more can I say? Although I usually dislike grape-flavored things, I really enjoy it in this particular candy and I recommend trying the grape-flavored Gummy Choco Ball first! I eat these gummies after finishing a lecture to congratulate myself on the accomplishment.
#SpoonTip: If you have trouble finding this specific brand, the brand Meiji also has a similar product!
6. Want-Want Senbai Rice Crackers
These rice crackers were a childhood classic. I don’t think they’re the best snack in the world, but they have a sort of enticing quality that makes you want more. I think it’s the balance between the sweet and salty flavors that draws me in. The rice crackers come in separate little packages, which means they’re perfect for sharing with your friends.
7. Sangaria Royal Milk Tea
Okay, this one technically isn’t a snack, but I’ve lost count of how many cans I’ve downed for a little pre-study sugar rush. I can guarantee that the quality of this milk tea is better than most boba stores around campus—and don’t worry, I’ve tried them all.
#SpoonTip: You can find most of them in the snack aisle of your local Asian grocery store (99 Ranch is my go-to), and check out these other snacks to get while you’re there. If you’re looking for something more filling, try upgrading your instant ramen.
Have you tried any of these Asian snacks before? If you have, then you probably understand my obsession with them. If you haven’t, well, what are you waiting for?
Happy midterm season, and good luck!
