If there’s anything I love in this world more than food, it’s Drake. You know that girl you see driving with her windows down, blasting Drake, and rapping every lyric when she really should be keeping her eyes on the road? Yeah, thats ‘s! #SorryNotSorry
Drizzy’s latest release ‘More Life’ has blessed us with hits like “Portland” with Quavo and Travis $cott, and “Glow” featuring Mr. Kanye West himself. Another song off the album that has been taking over the radio waves is “Passionfruit.” With a catchy rhythm and Drake’s soulful voice, the song has everyone feeling, well, passionate from miles away. Too much? Okay.
But after you’re done listening to the song, pretending you’re on a beach with a drink in your hand and Drake by your side, do ever think “WTF even is a passion fruit?” I had never had one and to me, passionfruit was just the name of a Drake song. But it’s a real fruit guys, I promise!
Origin
Passion fruits are the fruit of the passiflora vine which grow in warm climates located anywhere from South America to Australia. The tropical fruit comes in a variety of shapes, sizes, and colors but there are two main types that you’re more likely to find in the supermarket.
The first is the purple passion fruit which has a small round shape and purple skin. The second type is the yellow passion fruit which is slightly bigger than the purple passion fruit and has yellow skin. Basically, the name of the type matches the skin color. Innovative, I know. But the skin is super important because you’ll know when the fruit is ripe when the skin is slightly wrinkled.
Passion fruits are considered to be a type of berry. They have a tough outside, but a soft center. Kinda sounds like our boy Drake. Passion fruits have a sweet yet tart flavor that compliments many dishes. The thick juice and seeds inside make passion fruits perfect additions to drinks, salads, desserts.
Benefits
Passion fruits aren’t just good for titles of Drake songs; they actually have a long list of benefits. First, passion fruits are a low calorie snack that is easy to take on the go. The average 18g passion fruit is just 17 calories! Plus, out of all tropical fruits, passion fruits are the richest in polyphenols. Polyphenols are micronutrients that are packed with antioxidants. These polyphenols can only be obtained by eating plant based foods. Sorry bananas and mangos, but passion fruits have stolen the show.
Eating passion fruit can also boost your immune system function, increase skin health, and reduce signs of premature aging due to its high level of vitamins and antioxidants. Iron, copper, magnesium, fiber, Vitamin C, and Vitamin A are just some of the benefits packed into the fruit. This combination also promotes mineral bone density and overall bone strength. Plus, the berry is low in sodium, making it a great snack for those looking to lower their blood pressures.
Basically, passion fruit is an awesome fruit that you can add into your diet to reap loads of benefits! Thank you, Drake, for helping us all realize the importance of the passion fruit.
