Battle of the Donuts: Benny’s Donuts vs. Death By Donutz

This article is written by a student writer from the Spoon University at OR State chapter.

How did Corvallis ever survive without donuts? In the past year, this small college town has welcomed two new donut shops. Whether you’re looking for a grab-and-go breakfast or a late-night munchie, Benny’s Donuts and Death by Donutz will surely satisfy your cravings for this sweet treat.

Starting out as just a delivery service, Benny’s opened their storefront located in downtown Corvallis in September 2016. Developed from the OSU Advantage Accelerator program, Benny Augeri, the owner and founder, has turned his donut company into a modern, cozy café—a perfect place for a quiet breakfast, studying, or meeting with friends.

In January, Death by Donutz took over the storefront that was formerly known as Roxy Dawgs. Located on the corner of Monroe next to campus, Death by Donutz is a great place to stop for quick breakfast on your way to class.

Price

As college students, most of us are on a Ramen noodle and PBR budget while saving up for the Impulse Bar and Grill cover charge that weekend. So here’s the breakdown on where to get the best bang for your buck.

BENNY’S DONUTS:

Specialty donuts: $1.99 each

Old Fashion donuts: $1.49

$18.99 per dozen $10.99 half dozen

Benny’s offers free delivery Tuesday through Saturday from 6 pm to 10 pm with a minimum purchase of $12.

DEATH BY DONUTZ:

Classic donutz: $1.25 each and $12 per dozen

Designer donutz: $2.25 each and $22 per dozen

Death by Donutz also offers a “Sword” option, which is six donuts of your choice for $8 that comes on a plastic sword topped with a donut hole. They also offer delivery for a fee of $5 and a minimum purchase of a dozen donuts.

Variety

Benny’s Donuts offers a variety of flavors to top their standard cake donut. The specialty donut flavors include Maple with Sea Salt, Local Lemon Lavender, Chocolate with Peanut Butter, Chocolate with Coconut, Chocolate with Almonds, and Marionberry and Rosemary. They also offer gluten-free and vegan options available in Maple Sea Salt, Marionberry Rosemary, Chocolate Sprinkles, and Cinnamon Sugar.

Since these donuts are so rich and delicious, Benny’s offers a large selection of drinks to pair with your favorite donut. You can choose from their large list of teas from Oregon Coffee & Tea or an espresso drink made with Pacifica Coffee, both support local businesses in Corvallis.

Death by Donutz offers a wide variety of donut bases to pair with many toppings. Raised, White Cake, Marbled Cake, Chocolate Cake, Buttermilk Bars, Old-Fashioned, and Buttermilk Crowns create the base donuts before the toppings are added.

Unfortunately, there are no gluten-free options. As far as drinks go, Death by Donutz has plain black coffee, a machine with premade espresso drinks, a variety of juice, and a Pepsi soda fountain to keep your thirst quenched while you inhale deliciousness.

Taste

Straight from the fryer, Benny’s Donuts are served fresh and dipped right in front of you. The donuts are warm, fluffy, and will dissolve in your mouth with each bite. Benny’s even offers a donut that is both vegan and gluten-free. Although they are delicious, your eyes may be bigger than your stomach, because they are extremely rich and quite filling.

Death by Donutz makes fresh donuts once a day and twice on Fridays and Saturdays. Even if they aren’t served piping hot, they do taste as if they were just freshly made. One thing to note is how the donut-to-frosting ratio was ON POINT—not too rich and leaving enough room in your belly to fit a few extra ones.

So if you’re looking for a large variety of donuts that’s close to campus, Death by Donutz is the stop for a quick pick-me-up. If you want your donuts served hot and fresh with time to sit down with a handcrafted latte, then head downtown to Benny’s Donuts. At the end of the day, you can’t go wrong with either place, because a donut is a donut.
