The Best Doughnut You’ll Ever Have: Bennison’s Maple Bacon Long John

Updated Published

Breakfast food is arguably some of the best food out there. The options are virtually endless: Eggs, toast, fruit, waffles, sticky buns, yogurt, muffins, sausage, pancakes. But the extensive selection has to be narrowed down. A decision must be made. Something sweet? Or something savory?

Now, we now longer have to choose. We can have our savory breakfast items and still satisfy our sweet tooth.  Enter the Maple Bacon Long John from Bennison’s Bakery.

Bennison’s knows doughnuts. Among others, they offer cake doughnuts, long johns, jelly filled, and for a little over $2, they’re the perfect price for sleep deprived, empty-walleted college kids. The options are extensive, if not mind boggling. There’s the red velvet cake with a tangy cream cheese icing, the delicious raised coconut doughnut, and the chocolate cake ring drizzled with a not-too-sweet glaze. All fine choices, but they’re no Maple Bacon Long John.

The doughnut itself is perfectly raised with a light and airy texture and the maple icing is flavorful without being tooth achingly sweet. But, of course, what sets this breakfast pastry apart is the perfectly crispy, salty piece of bacon on top.

That’s it.  There’s nothing else, no other adornments, no caramel sauce or pastry cream filling. Anything else would be too much and would take away from the perfect simplicity that is a well fried piece of dough and a perfectly crisp strip of bacon. That one singular piece of delicious pork separates Bennison’s Maple Bacon Long John from all other contenders. Add a cup of fresh coffee and there is nothing wrong with this breakfast, except that it’s over way too soon.
