Apple Cider Vinegar Is a Great Natural Shampoo

This article is written by a student writer from the Spoon University at UVA chapter.

Apple cider vinegar is a cure-all commonly found in your parents’ pantry, but this old school staple has another superpower—giving you gorgeous hair. Claimed to have detoxifying benefits if consumed every day, apple cider vinegar may also be the answer to your dull, dry, and lifeless locks.

Lifeless Hair?

Hair product buildup due to improper cleansing can lead to greasy, dull strands. On the other hand, over-washing and coloring can strip hair of its natural oils, leading to an imbalance in hair’s pH. Besides causing stiff and frizz-prone locks, this pH imbalance can produce breakage, dandruff, and itchy scalp issues. Product and toxin buildup calls for some serious hair detox.

Apple cider vinegar (ACV) is the natural—and low-cost—answer to rejuvenating and reviving hair. The acidity of ACV restores the hair follicle, flattening the cuticle for smooth and silky strands. ACV is also packed with hair-fortifying nutrients including B vitamins, potassium, vitamin A, and amino acids.

Trying to Grow it Long?

Apple cider vinegar’s clarifying properties gently exfoliate the scalp, removing dead skin cells and the clogging buildup from styling products. Growing long hair starts with revitalizing the scalp and roots. The results? Stronger, healthier hair that’s easier to style and manage.

If you are plagued with itchy, inflamed, or dandruff-prone hair, ACV might be the magic answer to your problems. It’s anti-microbial and anti-inflammatory properties can relieve minor scalp irritants at a low cost.

DIY Apple Cider Vinegar Rinse

High-end ACV products like dpHUE’s raved-about rinse cost about $30 a bottle, but you can make a similar rinse at home for a much more college-friendly price. All you need is a mix of water, 2-4 tablespoons of ACV, and a few drops of lavender essential oil (to mask the vinegar scent). Massage this mixture over your rinsed hair and leave in for two minutes.
