Sushi is one of the greatest foods to ever exist in the world. There are endless options ranging from your basics such as spicy tuna and California to more adventurous ones like eel and lobster. While some people can’t get over the concept that sushi is raw fish, those who have accepted and embraced this know that there is nothing comparable to amazing, fresh sushi.
Long Island offers some of the best sushi restaurants, rolls, and appetizers anyone will ever have the luxury of trying. If you’re from LI, chances are, you pass a different sushi place every day whether it be on Merrick Road, Sunrise Highway, or Old Country Road. On both the North Shore and the South Shore, your sushi options are infinite.
If you’re home from college and sushi deprived (like I am), or if you’re just an avid sushi lover, these six options are some of the best I’ve ever encountered in my life, and there’s no doubt you’ll love them too.
1. Ginza’s Syosset Roll
The Syosset Roll is my favorite roll at Ginza. Whenever I am home from college, I beg my parents to take me here for this roll specifically. The spicy tuna is beyond fresh, and the avocado on top is perfectly ripe. These two foods create a combination that you’ll want to savor forever. I highly recommend going to Ginza with your family to order a combination of different rolls, but most importantly order two Syossets.

2. Xaga Sushi’s Spicy Tuna Pizza
Spicy tuna pizza is one of the fastest growing trends for sushi- loving basic girls, and Xaga’s version certainly doesn’t disappoint. The texture has just the right amount of crunchiness paired with the spicy mayo. Additionally, the spicy tuna is fresh and great quality. This is the perfect appetizer or lunch to improve anyone’s day.

3. Kotobuki’s Spicy Tuna Pizza
Kotobuki also offers a really unique and mouthwatering spicy tuna pizza. Kotobuki is definitely pricey, so I suggest going with relatives since after all, most people are on budgets. In addition to the spicy tuna, there is also shredded crab on top. The crab paired with the soy-mayo definitely makes this version of spicy tuna pizza very unique, and one you’ll always remember.
Location: 1530 Old Northern Blvd, Roslyn, NY 11576
4. MoCA Asian Bistro’s Spicy Tuna Pizza
If you couldn’t tell, I love spicy tuna pizza. MoCA’s variation is also beyond tasty. This version has onions, green peppers, and tofu aioli. While these are not the typical items found on spicy tuna pizza, they surprisingly taste good and create a beyond flavorful masterpiece. MoCA is conveniently located in a big shopping center, so this is the perfect place to go for a quick bite to eat when you’ve got a long list of errands ahead of you.

5. Komo Asian Cuisine’s Volcano Roll
This volcano roll has so many different flavors, it will satisfy anyone craving along the spectrum of sweet to spicy. This roll includes crab meat, spicy tuna, avocado, scallions, eel sauce, and sweet and spicy mayo sauce. In addition, this roll is really filling since it comes layered with different toppings. Komo is a great place to go when you’re in the mood for both classic and unique special rolls.

6. Taka Asian Fusion & Lounge’s Sweet Heart Roll
First off, look how cute the sushi is organized. Like its name, this roll comes shaped as a heart. Similarly to most of the other sushi options in this article, Taka’s Sweet Heart roll also has spicy tuna that does not disappoint. Besides the fact that this roll is tasty and delicious, it is also way bigger than expected, and is truly big enough for a meal. For college student budgets, sushi can be expensive, so being able to eat one roll and not be hungry afterwards is almost unheard of.

Sushi is one of my favorite foods in the world, and one of my biggest regrets is not trying it until I was 12-years-old. Now that it has been eight years since I discovered my love for sushi, I can’t imagine living on Long Island and not having access to an endless supply of sushi restaurants.
Every sushi-loving Long Islander has his or her favorite sushi place, and these are some of mine. These six dishes are some of the greatest meals I look forward to having when I am home from college. I highly recommend trying some of these places before your sushi deprivation kicks in again once you return to college.
