Ben & Jerry’s Free Cone Day

This article is written by a student writer from the Spoon University at UC Berkeley chapter.

On Tuesday April 8, a long line of people stood outside Ben & Jerry’s on Berkeley’s Center Street in anticipation for what was arguably one of the happiest days of the year: Free Cone Day! An annual event for Ben & Jerry’s to say “thank you” to their customers, Berkeley’s Free Cone Day was unique because the event’s host was Camp Kesem, a non-profit student-run organization that provides summer camp for kids with families affected by cancer.

Camp Kesem sold two dollar passes outside the store that allowed people lining up to skip the queue and achieve the instant gratification of a cone in their hand on the beautiful, sunny day. People generously donated to support the cause, as well as to hear counselors perform spectacular camp songs (complete with hand motions).

Inside the store, a team of enthusiastic Camp Kesem volunteers greeted customers and scooped as fast as they could from buckets of Salted Caramel Blondie, Hazed and Confused, Coffee Coffee Buzzbuzzbuzz- just a few of the many delectable flavors behind the glass counter.

The event was a fantastic success for Camp Kesem. From the smiles on the faces of students, families, babies and the rest of the Berkeley community, everyone enjoyed it thoroughly.
