8 Comforting Foods That Will Ease the Stress of Election Day

This article is written by a student writer from the Spoon University at Wisconsin chapter.

Tensions are sky high as two candidates face off at the polls this Election Day: Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, the potential first female President of the United States, and Donald Trump, the potential worst President we will ever have in the oval. Stress is contagious across the nation as voters turn in their ballots—so distract yourself and dig in.

1. Tater Tot Breakfast Pizza

You’ve made it this far, so you might as well start off your day with the unhealthiest breakfast you can fathom.

2. “Mexican” Mac and Cheese

Donald Trump’s personal favorite Mexican recipe (besides his beloved taco bowls) incorporates corn, chili, cayenne pepper, cheese, cilantro, and jalepeno peppers.

3. Dark Chocolate Cake

Chocolate cake will make you forget all the catty debates, snide comments, and disturbingly comedic Twitter wars. Don’t eat too much cake, though, because there’s a high probability you could turn into Miss Piggy.

4. Pumpkin Cheesecake Crumble Bars

In the spirit of fall, get your pumpkin fix to remind yourself that there is a light at the end of this desolate tunnel that is election day: Thanksgiving. You can find the recipe here.

5. Mimosa Smoothies

Alcohol might be necessary for this one. Start your election morning with a mimosa smoothie (sparkling wine, frozen fruit, OJ, and a touch of coconut rum). Take the edge off and think about how much more stressed Rosie O’Donnell probably is about those ballots. This has been her worst nightmare since ’06.

6.  Sesame Chicken

Skip the Chinese takeout and opt to make your own Sesame Chicken this election day, especially since we can’t think of China without thinking of this. Still too soon.

7. Crispy Quinoa Black Bean Burgers

Presidential nominee Donald Trump could be called a “junk-food aficionado.” On the campaign trail, he frequently feasts on Kentucky Fried Chicken, Big Macs, Quarter Pounders, and of course, taco bowls.

We can’t help but think…W.W.M.S? (What would Michelle say.) According to Trump, he loves fast food because of its “consistency and promise.” Instead, try this healthy burger alternative.

8. Jack Daniel’s Brown Sugar Ice Cream

End your night with a nightcap and a sweet treat as we (hopefully) say cheers to our next President. Make your own here.

May the odds be ever in our favor this election day.
