The Truth About Whether or Not Avocado Pits Are Poisonous

You might have heard the idea that avocado pits are poisonous floating around the internet. But is this really true? Camps are divided on whether or not they’re actually a superfood or a super way to go to the hospital. The answer is yes and no, but mostly no.

There is a slight amount of persin, a fungicidal toxin similar to a fatty acid, in avocado pits, and the skin, bark, and leaves of the avocado tree. But there is only a very small amount, meaning that the avocado seed is not really poisonous to humans, unless eaten in massive quantities.

Persin, however, and therefore avocado pits, can be toxic to animals. Some sites say that avocado pits are even toxic to cats and dogs, but that is a highly debated subject, with most people saying that it’s not toxic enough to actually harm these domestic animals.

That said, persin is in fact harmful to some animals, such as birds and large animals, like horses and cattle.

But if you’re a human, don’t worry about it.

In fact, most people use avocado pits to make a powder that can then be added to smoothies and other beverages. It’s important to keep in mind, however, that they’re very bitter, so its best to mix them with strong flavors.

Avocado pits, too, are filled with antioxidants and fiber, making them great for your body and skin. Just don’t eat a ridiculous amount of it, and you’ll be fine.
