It’s that time in the summer where instead of missing Boone, we are all just pumped to be getting back up the mountain. Every time of the year is a great time in Boone because it’s all in what you make it, but there is something about the fall that is mesmerizing. Here are all the things to be excited about for the fall in Boone:
1. App vs Tennessee
This isn’t in Boone but this is going to be one of the biggest games of the season. Coming back from that amazing last season, our team is ready to go in gun’s blazing and our student body knows how to tailgate.
2. App vs Miami
Now this game will be one for the books. This is not the first home game of the season, but this is a huge team to be coming to play at The Rock. Tickets for this game are going to go quick so everyone better make sure they are at this game ready to go.
3. Woolly Worm Festival
In the High Country we love our Woolly Worms so much that we dedicate an entire festival to them. As an upcoming freshman, you need to make sure you get down there at least one time in your four years as a student, you won’t regret it.
4. The Avett Brothers
Let me be the first to say, I love this band. I’ve seen them 5 or 6 times and they never fail to impress me. With the recent release of their album True Sadness, their tour has lead them to our beautiful campus (thank god!). Having a band this big come too Boone was big news for students and it sold our very quickly so hopefully you’ve already bought your tickets!
5. King Street Eats
Just go eat. Please don’t pick one restaurant and go there every single time, try all the restaurants because they are wonderful. With so many local options, being away from them has lead you constantly crave them.
6. The Hypnotist Show
Every year for Welcome Week we have the pleasure of experiencing hypnotist Paul Ramsey’s show Mind Games. It is such a cool show and, if you’re brave enough, you will let yourself become a part of it. In the convocation center, we get to spend the evening watching our classmates truly believe they are Elsa, or maybe fall in love with someone in the audience. You don’t want to miss it this year.
7. Moon Taxi
On August 24th, we are being blessed with the presence of Moon Taxi for the second time in one year (winning). Legends is a prime venue to go check out some bands you may have heard of (or may have not) but this band is one you should not miss out on.
8. The Big Sale
The Big Sale is put on every year to benefit Watauga County Habitat for Humanity and The Hunger and Health Coalition. A student organization called Don’t Throw It Away accepts donations and collects all of the items that people leave in dorms for the sale. This sale is a huge life saver for those who are in need of things but don’t have a lot to spend on it. Get ready, freshman, because y’all are about to load up on good buys.
9. Free Food On Campus
One huge perk to of fall semester is the constant recruiting that clubs are going on that means a looooot of free food for students. You get to talk to very dedicated and friendly people to learn more about their clubs while scooping some pizza, it’s a win win.
10. Getting Involved
One thing everyone tells you to do as an incoming freshman is to become as involved on campus as you can be. As a junior, I can say that is something I would highly recommend starting early. Club Expo is the perfect place to see all the clubs App has for us.
11. River Tubing
This is one activity that I look forward to every year coming back to Boone. Sitting in a river for a few hours with your friends, listening to music, catching up, and soaking up the sun is a wonderful way to spend a day.
12. Hiking
Learning all of the trails out there on the Parkway and beyond is something every App student needs to do in the fall. Do as many of them as you can before the weather starts to go cold then pick back up in the spring. Fully embracing the beauty of our surroundings is one of the most important things about being on the mountain.
13. Weather
Saying the weather is perfect is an understatement. The weather could not get any better than it is when fall semester rolls back around. It is perfectly warm without the humidity and when the breeze is blowing you just want to be outside for hours. You have to enjoy this while we have it because once it’s gone for the winter, you’ll be crying for it back.
Now everyone is different. Some might have other things to be excited for in the fall and, trust me, the list could go on for miles but these are a few highlights of the High Country. Boone is a magical place when the students start to come back into town and we have all returned to our home. See you soon Boone.
