What You Missed At Our First Annual Guac-Off

This article is written by a student writer from the Spoon University at JHU chapter.

On a cold and rainy Thursday afternoon, eight student competitors and two renowned Baltimore Mexican restaurants came together in the ultimate arena, The Great Hall, to separate those who talk the talk from those who can guac the guac.

Student competitors included Relay for Life, Spoon University Hopkins, Kappa Kappa Gamma, Phi Mu, Alpha Phi, Michael Koo, Monica Taneja, and Leslie MacManus.

But, the ultimate face-off was between Federal Hill’s Blue Agave Mexican Food and Canton’s Nacho Mama’s to see who could take home bragging rights for serving Hopkins students’ favorite guacamole. Nacho Mama’s really sweetened the deal, personally assembling every single chip with a smear of their homemade guacamole, a piece of jumbo lump crab, a spoonful of roasted corn kernels, all topped off with some perfectly crisped bacon bits. This myriad of complementing flavors and textures ultimately helped secure the Hopkins students’ votes and allowed Nacho Mama’s to emerge victorious.

As for those representing Hopkins, the groups that had the most avoca-do’s and the fewest avoca-don’ts were Kappa Kappa Gamma, who snagged first place, and Alpha Phi who followed up with a close second.

“It guac-ed my socks off. Seriously the best damn thing to come to this campus. Nothing like bonding with one another over some delicious guac, creative recipes, and healthy competition. [I was] very impressed,” said Amanda Lourenco (pictured above right), a senior from Kappa Kappa Gamma. Coming from the winning team, she may be a little biased about the success of the event, but we will take the high praise nonetheless. You are welcome to spoon with us any time, Amanda!
